This was a private revelation to a canonized saint, which means that the revelation is accepted as authentic. However, the popular adoption of the prayer that St. Gertrude was given to say — as if it applied to anyone who said the words — is dubious. The saint herself may have been given this task as a genuine vocation, but it is not valid for you or me to assume that a thousand souls will be released from purgatory when we pray. Nevertheless, the revelation should serve as an encouragement for us all to become holy and to pray for the souls in purgatory. I can’t say that I’ve mastered the former, but I do practice the latter on a daily basis. And you?

Lest someone think otherwise, I also have to state for the record that Catholics are not required to believe any private revelation, even if it has been approved by the Church.

Now that makes sense, David.

I do pray for the souls in purgatory and do indulgences... I'm called to attempt the plenery indulgence of 30 min in adoration often weekly.

Wonderful! I have my weekly hour at Adoration, too, and I know that it can be a blessing for the entire Church if done well.

Not because of the promises, but because of the strength of the prayers, we prayed them in voice chat each night for three years.  A bunch of us from around the world almost, couldn't sleep, we all met in a chat room, and  would spend our nights praying together.

It was a crazy awesome time in my life, and though we don't chat as much now, we are definitely family.  I do prefer sleep to no sleep, c-paps work wonders.  But, at the same time, God used our humble offering of prayer for so many souls.  The St. Bridget prayers were a big part of it. Cheesy

Anyway, in those three years times we saw amazing miracles occur for people that we prayed them for.
