Phillip Hannan, Archbishop Emeritus of New Orleans, had a stroke this morning. He is recovering this evening and has begun rehab. Please remember him in your prayers.
Hannan is 94 years old. After he retired as Archbishop of New Orleans, he founded a Catholic television station in New Orleans, which he continues to manage.
The archbishop was a military chaplain and paratrooper during World War II, parachuting into the front lines to minister to allied soldiers. He was later named bishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., and was a close friend of President John F. Kennedy and the Kennedy family, and a frequent guest at the White House during the Kennedy administration. He celebrated the 1963 funeral liturgy for the assassinated president, and preached the nationally televised homily. He remained a close friend of the Kennedy family, and was present at the Greek Orthodox wedding of the president's widow, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, to Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onasis. He was also present for other family weddings, such as the marriages of John Kennedy Jr. and Caroline Kennedy.
Hannan succeeded John Cody as archbishop of New Orleans. Cody was named archbishop and later cardinal archbishop of Chicago. Largely through Hannan's efforts, my own diocese of Houma-Thibodaux was approved by Pope Paul VI and established in 1978. In 2000, he advised Catholics it would be a sin to vote for Mary Landrieu for senate because of her pro-abortion beliefs, but she was elected by a narrow margin. She was narrowly reelected, and her public support remains soft.
Hannan was also involved in naming the New Orleans Saints. When John Mecom was awarded the franchise, his first intention was to name the team the Cajuns, but that name was already taken by what was then the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, ULL). He called Hannan to ask if it would be OK to name the team the Saints. Hannan says he thought the name would be fine, but he said he told Mecom "you realize most of the saints were martyrs."
The Saints lived up to his prediction until last year.
