On this day (June 6) in 1944, Allied troops stormed the shore of Normandy to begin the recapture of Europe from the Nazis.
Unlike today, the troops were universally supported and honored for their sacrifices.
Unlike today, the troops universally believed in their cause.
Unlike today, tens of thousands gave their lives.
Please remember in your prayers those who lived and those who died on the beaches of Normandy, and those who live and those who die today, defending our freedom.
Regardless of our feelings about the war, our troops have earned our universal support and respect. Honor them today in your prayers and in your thoughts.
For the living: Gracious God, we know the horrors of war display the worst of what you created, and we earnestly long for peace. Protect the brave men and women who fight to defend us, and protect their enemies as well, so that all may some day be able to return home to their families.
And for those who have died: Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
For their families: Heavenly Father, comfort those whose loved ones are half a world away defending our nation's freedom. Grant them the one gift they truly desire, and that is the return of their sons and daughters, parents and spouses, friends and relatives. And for the families of those who rest with you, grant them the blessings of comfort your Son promised those who mourn.
And for the wounded and disabled: Grant them the grace of your healing power, and heal them in mind, body, and soul, so they may faithfully continue on their path to salvation.
In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

| Rick, my dad was a part of that operation. He used to tell me about the horrible trip they made over there in the ship. Some of the things he witnessed haunted him the rest of his life. He never could bring himself to watch "Saving Private Ryan" when it came out. But I was always (and am) so proud of what America did then. BTW, I have two old shoeboxes full of the love letters my dad and mom sent back and forth to each other while he was overseas, and in training here. They were in their early twenties. It's the best reading ever!

What a treasure! I hope you read them frequently. After Katrina, I have to say be sure to store them in a waterproof container!
