VATICAN CITY, JUL 31, 2007 (VIS) - Pope Benedict XVI's general prayer intention for August is: "That all those who are going through moments of inner difficulty and trial may find in Christ the light and support which leads them to discover authentic happiness."
His mission intention is: "That the Church in China may bear witness to ever greater inner cohesion and may manifest her effective and visible communion with Peter's Successor." he above article is reposted with permission from the Vatican Information Service.Last edited on Tue Jul 31st, 2007 09:03 pm by CajunRick

The guest priest at Mass this past Sunday is a priest in China and he is also an MD. He was telling us that the Church is making some progress in China. It is a slow progress but it is progress.

| Can anyone tell me why the Chinese government wants to appoint the bishops in China instead of allowing the Pope to do it? Why do they care if there is no political gain for them? Does it have anything to do with their one child per family law?

Here's my opinion.
China is an atheistic, Communist society. They don't want religion at all, but if they have to have it, they want to control it. They certainly don't want the representative of a "foreign power" (Vatican City) appointing bishops who can criticize the actions of government. If they have to have bishops, they want them to be beholden to the government, so the government can control what they say.
The "one child per family" law involves artificial birth control and mandatory abortion and sterilization. They certainly don't want bishops loyal to Rome issuing pastorals calling the government to task.
If Rome wants to criticize China, that's fine. The state-controlled media simply won't report it. But if bishops stand in the pulpit and criticize the government, they can't keep the people from hearing it. So like they control the media, they want to control the Church.
That's the Communist way! It was no different in the Soviet Union when the government controlled what little of the Russian Orthodox Church they allowed to exist.
