I need to know what to do with my life. I want to be a firefighter and paramedic, but I'm considering being a nun. My brother was a monk at the Mt. Angel Abbey in Oregon, but left 2 months ago and is now teaching english in Korea. Mom would like it if i were to be a nun, but i want to make the decision not just because she would be happy with it. I'm 16, so i don't have a lot of time to decide. I'm ging to Steubenville for college, so I need to choose a major. Thanx!!!

Vocations (to the religious life or otherwise) require prayerful discernment and can take years to recognize. My oldest brother is a priest, but he did not go into college expecting to become one. He went to Ohio University and majored in Journalism; he had a girlfriend there for a while, I think. He worked at our dad's company after graduation for a while before recognizing the call to the priesthood.
His journalism major ended up being a great help for him, because he knows how to write and edit well, which, paired with his personality and charisms, makes him an excellent homilist.

Ahh, do not fret too much. You have plenty of time to make decisions- heck, I'm in college right now and still don't know what I want to do. Maybe I want to teach. Maybe I want to be a lawyer, or a nun, or youth minister or or or.... I have no idea! lol
Mt. Angel, eh? Wonderful! I have a friend who is a second year seminarian there. And I believe my priest back home (which is near you, Camas, WA) went to seminary at the Abbey as well.
Anyways, rest assured of my prayers. Deepen your relationship with Christ and He will show you the way.

| You're right also about Mt. Angel! i love it. i wouldn't consider living anywhere alse, except of course Ireland or Rome, or something like that. But Mt. Angel is still the best, and even better, it's home.

| From what Ive read to become a full fledged monk or nun it takes around six years. One goes through differnt levels or stages of being a postulant I think its called, so it takes a long time before making final vows. I think your main focus should be to just get as good an education as you can right now. Im ten years older than you and trust me you do what you have to do like get an education and if you keep putting Gods will first he will take care of you. It might not be fun, there might be suffering, you might make what seems like bad choices but keep fighting the good fight and He will be there for you.

I'm on the downside of my 50's and just changed careers again! I've been a journalist, an accountant, a computer consultant, and a hospice chaplain, and now I'm back in the computer field as assistant network administrator for an ISP.
I can't imagine a worse life than getting locked into something and finding out you hate it, or that you're just not good at it. Get your degree but never miss the opportunity to learn about something else. It will make you a better, more interesting person, and increase your opportunities to minister to others.
