Friends in Christ,

Please join me in prayer this week, that is a wonderful part of being in the body of Christ, the communion of saints!  I will be going on a retreat at Mepkin Abbey, down in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. http://www.mepkinabbey.org/home.htm

Right before leaving, many things have gone wrong and bad news has flooded in, not that I have not seen that happen in the past.  God is good, and I am so thankful for this opportunity.

Along my path to the Catholic Church I had the occasions to visit the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers Georgia several times, and also the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky.  I attended Baptist seminary in Louisville Kentucky, and went to the monastery several times, never a clue that one day I would become a Catholic.  Thomas Merton lived at that monastery.

Thanks Be to God,

Monte:)

Monte, I wish you the best during your retreat.  I will pray for you that God will achieve with you what He wants during this time.  I have looked at the website there a couple of times, wistfully!  Let us know how it goes.  God bless

Thanks all of y'all for your prayers. It was a wonderful week at the Abbey of Our Lady of Mepkin down in Moncks Corner, SC.

The brothers were a blessing, literally. Often they blessed me for being there and helping out during the mornings.  The ritual of praying the Psalms as part of the liturgy of the hours was great.  While I did not even go with a specific goal other than rest in mind, God gave me some surprises as the week went along.

I've not been on retreat yet, since my baptism in 2003.  If it would not be prying too much, could you share a bit more of your day's & nights at the monestary???

Do you just join in with the monks?

Do visitors have a special schedule?

are you on your own or are there other visitors on retreat with you also?

Just stuff like those questions, were what I was wondering.

I pray you benefit a lot from this retreat. How I wish I can go to one as such. I had a look at the website and there was on e article on the crisis of the church. How nice and helpful it would be if all diacesan priests get such retreat once in a while away from the exhausting taking care of the flock in the world. God bless you peace, pray for me too.

I'll have to get a paper I left at home with the daily schedule.

Mostly, we gathered in the church building where folks who are on retreat and other visitors are invited to stand in the choir stalls near the monks. The choir area is about half of the church building.  Then they follow a service of singing the psalms as the church has done for hundreds of years.  They have a Psalm book that is really cool, it is printed in calligraphic script.

There are simple meals, mostly vegetarian, but we did have chicken one meal.  The meals are taken in silence, except at lunch, when a reader reads to the monks from a devotional book.

There is a discipline of silence, which is not absolute, but it is best to only speak if a monk speaks to you. The older monks and some men who live with them but are guests, mostly retired religious of other orders, will speak to visitors more often.

I read a lot in the library, and walked and prayed.  There was no organized classes or sessions as one has at many retreats.  There is the opportunity to meet with a monk and receive some spiritual direction.

In our diocese, priests go on retreat twice a year.  They spend one week in retreat with our bishop, and are encouraged to take an additional week on a private retreat.  I'm sure other dioceses have similar opportunities for their priests.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience.  I think I would love to be silent and have the quiet atmosphere to spend time in the chapel and walk the grounds in reflection of God.  Just being silent would be so amazing.  this noisy frantic world we live in, get's to be too much.

How nice and helpful it would be if all diacesan priests get such retreat once in a while away from the exhausting taking care of the flock in the world. God bless you peace, pray for me too.

Hello Sindon

I know of at least Once a year that our southern deanery of Priest in our area, go on retreat to the Oregon Coast together, and I also think that father goes on one or more separate times.

I completely agree that our priest need some rest, peace and quiet from the flock to rejuvinate them from their busy schedule.  I pray for our priest daily that he find time for rest, as he has only us lay folks to help him in a very large community that covers another sister parish in another county also.  There are only a few things that we can do to help him and many things that require a priest.

Please all, Pray and offer for our Holy Catholic Priest daily!

God Bless

Betty

I seem to recall that under canon law priests are required to go on retreat once a year. I think it was in the same section regulating clothing, the praying of the liturgy of the hours, etc.

And now I wanna go on a retreat!:)

I'd like to go on a retreat sometime soon too!

Christ my God, You have set Monte's heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame he may love You with all his heart, with all his mind, and with all his soul and with all his strength, and his neighbor as himself, so that by keeping Your commandments he may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift.
