I am planning on calling the local Catholic Church this AM and making an appointment to see the priest.  This is a very small town - mostly conservative protestants  -- so there is only one Catholic Church.  I would appreciate prayer from anyone who is so led.  Thanks Liz

Dear Liz, I pray you will be able to get that appointment, and that it will allow you to speak with someone who will encourage you there.  Let us know how it goes, we love good stories!

Liz,

Did you get to see the priest?

How did it go?

I did get to meet with Father D.  He was wonderful and we have now met twice.  The only real barrier at this point remains my husband.:(

I am so happy that you were led to such a priest.  I hope he can offer you guidance as you move toward Rome without the support of your husband.

Women our age are not supposed to evolve.  I finally wrote a loving letter to one dear relative explaining that I simply could not make decisions about my spiritual life based on the consensus of my relatives.

I'm going to be remembering you in prayer, Liz.

Liz

I'm very thankful that you were able to meet with the priest and that you seem to of had a plesant visit.

Your not alone in having a struggle with your dh and your conversion.  Many of us have had the same issues.

God Bless

Betty

I love that!  And it's what people seem to think we should do, but at this stage of my life, I don't care anymore.  I'm doing the thinking from now on!

For me it became a determination to keep my eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of my faith, even when closest, much-loved relatives were hurting and begging me not to follow what I knew to be the will of the Holy Spirit for me.  I truly feel for anyone whose spouse is protesting.  (I am a widow and did not have that particular trial to face.)  However, once it was clear to me what God was demanding of me, I could not disobey and I could not delay.  Nothing in life is scarier than resisting the Holy Spirit.

I do so like Pheobe's loving letter way of dealing with her relative.  We really must just keep it at that loving level no matter how much they misunderstand:?...I must remember that my family has a totally "protestant mind-set."

Blessings to all and thanks for the prayers -- please continue to pray . Thanks --Liz

You're right, Liz.  Because the tone of the letter was gentle and forbearing, the dear relative responded with a few specific questions such as how can this guidance you refer to be of the Holy Spirit since He would not want our entire family to suffer this kind of pain.

The door was opened for a brief presentation of Catholic teaching on suffering.  Most Protestants don't have a clue what to do with Col. 1:24.  The TV gospel of Prosperity and Eternal Chirpiness has crept in to mainstream churches; many members now believe God's first priority is to protect His children from all suffering.  They have either forgotten, or never understood, that He is far more interested in personal holiness and in our contributions to His redemptive plan.

In this matter and in all others, we can hope to lead our loved ones toward the Church only as we have shown ourselves to be loving, patient, gentle, and forbearing.  And the hardest, yet most important virtue, of course, is humility.  Give us all grace, Lord.  We can not do it of ourselves.

Well said Phoebe.  If we do not witness in the spirit of humility, those around us will not truly hear what we are saying.  I sometimes fall into a pattern of being the "know-it-all" of the family in the religion department, since no one else is taking up the reins.  I have to make an effort to be low key in what I say and do.  I have an upcoming weekend with my daughter and her in-laws for a grandchild's birthday.  They are all agnostic, and one son claims to be atheist.  I am polishing my halo and practicing my smile!

Liz comes into Your house in the greatness of Your mercy: and in fear and trembling, she will worship toward Your holy temple because of the awesomeness and majesty she beholds. Lead her, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of her enemies; make Your way straight before her and her husband, that with a clear mind they may glorify You forever, One Divine Power worshiped in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
