Friends,

My sixth grandchild was born early Wednesday morning.  He had been doing well (meeting expectations) until last night.  Last night he had seven episodes of apnea.  That's frightening!

He was born at 28 weeks 5 days, weighing 2 lb. 15 oz.  He has a long stay in the NICU ahead of him.  His mommy came home yesterday from the hospital.

Please pray that Hudson may overcome his difficulties, and pray that his doctors have wisdom in his care.

Thank you!!

Ruth

Ruth, I have prayed not only that Hudson will be well, but that he will be a priest some day.

Ruth, I will include Hudson in my rosary.  How tiny and precious!  It is an inspiring thought that John is praying for Hudson to be a priest someday.  Kind of like laying him in the lap of God to take care of him until adulthood.

I will be praying for the grandbaby, his parents, the family, and the medical folks caring for him.

Get some sleep, Nana.

Congratulations Ruth!

What a blessing to welcome a new little man in your family.

I will pray and offer my rosary tonight for your little fellow.  Such a rough beginning.  I'll also pray and offer for his mommy & daddy too.  I cannot even imagine how difficult that must be to leave their little guy at the hospital and not get to bring him home yet.

My prayers are with you and your whole family in this frightening time for you all.

Please keep us posted, so we can continue to pray for Hudson to heal, grow and come home where he belongs.

God Bless

Betty

For what it's worth, the prognosis is excellent these days for premature babies.  In fact, he weighs almost a whole pound more than a baby I know who was born about 56 1/2 years ago.  He wasn't supposed to survive.

But I fooled 'em!  God had plans for me, and my mom had enough of a sense of humor to name me after her obstetrician and my pediatrician!

I can't believe you survived being born that small 56 1/2 years ago.  You are a miracle!  They just didn't have very much to work with then like they do now.  But God was around way back then too, right?  1 lb. 15 oz.?  I think I cooked more than that for supper tonight!

Thanks for all the prayers and nice comments.  It would be wonderful if Hudson had a calling to the priesthood.  He's been through a lot (his mother had surgery twice for ovarian cancer while she was carrying him).  I do believe he has some special calling -- he's a miracle :-)

Hudson had a slightly better night.  Also, I talked to the NICU nurse and she said that apnea episodes are common in preemies of his gestational maturity.  He should "grow out of it".

Please continue to keep Hudson in your prayers.  He will be in the hospital for quite a while yet.

Thank you!

Ruth

Thank you, Rick.

Really, though, 50 years ago babies that size did not normally survive.  I had one cousin who was called a miracle child for the same reason.  He weighed two pounds when he was born (delivered by a country doctor in an Arkansas farm house).  The doctor thought he was dead and set his body down on the washstand while he tended to the mother.  I guess it was cold, because the baby started making little noises.

My aunt kept him in a dresser drawer close to the kitchen stove to keep him warm.  She had to feed him from an eye dropper because he couldn't suck.  He grew up!

I'm glad you're here :-)  I appreciate your prayers!

Ruth

Update:

Hudson had NO apnea episodes last night.  His weight continues to rise (after the initial drop to 2 lb. 9 oz.).  He weighed 2 lb. 13 oz. last night.

The little guy is one week old today.

Thank you so much for your prayers.  Keep 'em coming!

Ruth

That's great.  My mom swears I was three years old before I slept through the night, and then she called my dad home from work to see if I was still breathing!

Hudson had a difficult weekend.  He was doing well last week, so my husband and I planned a short trip to PA to visit family.  On Thursday, we were about 2/3 of the way there (400 mile trip) when we got a call that Hudson was having problems.  His little digestive system was messed up.  The doctor suspected infection, so he was taken off his oral feedings, a "pic line" was put in, and he got antibiotics.

On Monday he was somewhat improved, although as of yesterday he was still receiving all nourishment intravenously rather than orally.

Here's a recent picture.  The tube in his mouth is for suction.

Ave Maria,

Ruth

Oh, Ruth!  He's beautiful and adorable, but it's heartbreaking to see all those tubes and things and the expression in his little eyes.

I will increase my prayers for you, the parents, and this precious little boy.

He is adorable!  I will increase my prayer for him also.  St. Rita is the patron for difficult cases, does anyone know of a novena to her?  I just know there are guardian angels around him.  God bless you and your family.

Ruth

Thank you for sharing your picture.  He is the most precious child that I've ever layed eyes on.  Could not hold back the tears.

Oh, Lord Jesus Please come to the aid of your little one Hudson, help him to grow and to heal so he can come home to his mother & father.

Blessed Mary our mother, may you wrap your loving arms around Hudson and comfort him at this time that his own mothers arms are not yet able to stay with him day and night.

We ask this in the name of your son Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with God the father and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever Amen

God Bless your whole family Ruth

Betty

Thank you for that beautiful prayer.

All:

Hudson is improving.  His mommy has been able to hold him for about an hour a day for the past several days.  He is still being fed intravenously rather than orally, but he is up to 3 lb. 3 oz. so he is gaining weight anyway.

Because he can only be held once a day, I haven't been able to hold the little guy yet.  But I am making him a little knitted blanket -- it's almost done.

He will be in the NICU until he's between 4 and 5 pounds, able to feed at bottle or breast, and able to maintain his body temperature.  In other words, for a long time yet.

Ave Maria,

Ruth

I'm so thankful Ruth, that your little man is doing better, his mommy can hold him for some time a day.  I guess it better than not at all.

He's growing and that is certainly encouraging.  What a celebration it will be to bring Hudson home.

He's going to be so happy to meet her Nana.

Gods blessing to you and your family and thank you for sharing and letting us pray for your little guy.

He is a beautiful wonder of God.
O God, our heavenly Father, who loves mankind and are a most merciful and compassionate God, have mercy upon Your servant Hudson for whom I humbly pray to You to care for and protect. O God, be the families guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of Your truth, and draw them nearer to You, so that they may lead a godly and righteous life in Your love as they do Your will in all things. Give them Your grace, and mercy so that they may be patient, hard working, tireless, devout and charitable. Defend them against the assaults of the enemy, and grant them wisdom and strength to resist all temptation and corruption, and direct them in the way of Salvation, through the goodness of Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, and the prayers of His Holy Mother and the blessed saints.  May Hudson glorify you all the days of his life. Amen.

Update on Baby Hudson:

Earlier this week, we thought Hudson was coming home.   We set up the crib for him at my daughter's apartment, and she spent two nights at the hospital to share in his care.

On Monday, the doctors did his circumcision.  He reacted badly to the anasthesia and had to be resusitated.

He has required oxygen off and on since then.   Today a test showed that he is having seizures.

Please continue to keep Hudson and Cathy his mother in your prayers.  They surely need them!

Ruth

Way, way, way back in the day, many, many moons ago, in 1951 on March 24th, which was Holy Saturday with Easter the next day, my twin brother Martin and I were born in Bristol, VA. We were well over a month premature. I was only about five pounds but dropped back to about three pounds. Then, suddenly, I started growing and grew and grew and grew until today I weigh, uh, um, well, let's just say I wear XXL clothes now, ha, ha!  I have known of a number of other premature children, over the years, who, despite being very small grew and thrived. I fervently pray that your precious grandson will do the very same thing, that he will grow, thrive and become a fine Christian man who will worship and serve God!! AMEN!!!  May God bless him and you and your family!!
