Hi all. I have been asked to substitute teach for one of our pastors in on March 16. This is a great opportunity and I look forward to filling in for him. I will be teaching a class of mostly seniors, 55 years to 95 years. There will be around 100 in the class. (unless they hear ahead of time that the cat's away...then the number may be lower)
I have a choice of following on in his series in Isaiah chapter 40 or I may speak on a Palm Sunday theme giving the Old Testament roots of the Triumphal Entry of Christ and maybe the subseqent historical beginnings of the celebration of Palm Sunday in the early church. I have to let him know on Sunday. Please pray I hear the voice of the Lord and that I faithfully expound the word with practical applications for today's living.
If you have any background stuff I can use, please let me know. Remember, these are evangelical Presbyterians I'm speaking to so I have to watch my P's & Q's.
Thanks.
Rich

Rich, I can tell that John Conlee is giving lots of thought to which topic you should pursue. Wish I could hear your presentation for I know you will do a fabulous job! I'll pray for you as you prepare.

Thanks Becky. With only a week away, I'll probably choose the subject that is easiest to research. By God's grace, I'll be as true to the word as I can be and maybe even sneak in a few veiled Catholic doctrines or quotes.

You will certainly be in my prayers, Rich.
Not to digress from the topic (God forbid!) but in the Catholic Church, one of the most significant meanings of Palm Sunday is the dichotomy between Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem and his Passion and Death later that same week. In fact, in the Catholic Church, Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday, and the passion narrative from one of the synoptic gospels is read every year (This is Cycle A, so the Passion will be from Matthew).
And the symbol of that dichotomy is the palm itself. We place it on a wall, or over a doorway, or behind a crucifix, and over the course of the next year we see it wither and die. It was originally a sign of the triumphant entry into Jerusalem by the Messiah (remember that palm branches were used to soften the way for the feet of a horse carrying a general or emperor), but it becomes a symbol of our death to sin. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust. "Remember man that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." (From the blessing with ashes on Ash Wednesday.)
I'm not sure how much of that would fit in with the Presbyterian liturgy, but I believe you use the RCL so you should have the same Passion narrative. In the Catholic Church, this is one of the very few days with two readings from the gospel, representing the dichotomy of the feast. Mass begins with the story of the glorious entry into Jerusalem, and ends (as does Holy Week) with the Passion and Death of Christ.

Thanks to all of you who remembered to pray for me yesterday. Despite having a migraine headache and groggy from the Imitrix I had taken, God was made perfect in my weakness. I was warmly received, the teaching went very well and, I believe, hearts were touched. Little did they know, most of my teaching was straight out of the Catholic Catechism as well as other Catholic writers and saints. These Presbyterians didn't know what hit them.
So thanks be to God his grace WAS sufficient and it went well. Thanks again for remembering me.

Rich, I'm sorry to hear about the migraine (was also a sufferer for twenty years) but delighted to learn that you were happy about the experience.
That's great.
Becky
