Please pray for my safety going to my oblate retreat at St. Meinrad next Monday-Wednesday. I've been feeling poorly lately but I realize I need to go on this retreat regardless of how I feel. I hope it will be like my vacation last year. I drove all the way to the Adirondacks alone feeling crummy but after 3 days in the cabin I felt fine and had a great time.:D My brother said, "for relief, take two Adirondacks." Next week I will take 3 St. Meinrads.

This will be my first oblate retreat, I missed the December one because of iffy weather.

Pax,

Sounds wonderfully marvelous Annie!

O Lord, You who steadied the hand of Peter as he began to sink on the stormy sea, if you are with Annnie, no one is against her. Grant to her the shield of faith and the mighty armor of the Holy Spirit to protect her in her travels and guide her to do Your will. The future she put into Your hands, O Lord, and follows You to a deeper life in Christ. Amen

Thank you for praying for me. I was wearing my JPII Be Not Afraid shirt and my green scapular and my St. Benedict medal. The trip went well. I got pretty sick one day but survived as usual (even though I think I won't). Everybody there was very nice and I decided to make my final oblation there. That will be later this year.

I made a cool movie of people walking to morning prayer and the church bells started to ring. When the bells stopped there was the sound of the birds. My friend Jerry shuttled people around in the golf cart.

I got some encyclicals and stuff at the bookstore and my own copy of the Liber Cantualis. And a St. Meinrad t-shirt (very important).

They are very liberal there but I notice how conservative most of the oblates are so there is a balance. The program was great. Fr. Cyprian Davis is a great speaker and he quoted some poetry of Jessica Powers whom I had never heard of before. It was very helpful.

Pax,

You go down there and make promises of stability to the abbey, that you will pray the Liturgy of the Hours, etc. That you will live a Benedictine lifestyle in the world. I am just a novice now, the novice part lasts a year during which they send you chapters that go in a ring binder they give you. The chapters explain about Benedictine history and how to live as a Benedictine in the world.

The oblation is renewable from year to year if you feel you have to bail. It isn't like taking vows. You make promises.

I wasn't sure about it before but on this trip I decided it was a pretty good fit all in all.:reading:

This is great, Annie.  It sounds so promising for you.  What a blessing.  I'm glad you were able to attend this time.

What will the ceremony be like for your final oblation?

All my best,
Ali

They say words about will you be part of the community there. And you say, "I do" type words. And you write out a form and put it on the altar. The form says you are making a final oblation.

:offtopic:I'm glad I saw this. I'm at jury duty for two weeks but they have computers here. It is very fun so far. They have a TV for movies and I brought The Imitation of Mary to read in the reading room. For lunch I visited the hot dog lady with the cart on High St.

I might get a trial this afternoon though.:woohoo:

Annie, I didn't see this thread until tonight.  I'm glad you were able to go and get back without a major illness!  Sounds like you are comfortable with the decision to enter the third order there.  I will keep you in my prayers for strength for your vocation.  God bless
