I received this letter from a friend of mine, today (Pedro Vega). Please pray for his wife. Her name is Mercedes:

The surgery that my wife and I have been dreading for almost two years will come to pass next month on November 5. . . . [It] consists of removing bone at the opening located at the base of the skull where the spinal chord meets the brain stem. The condition occurs when the brain abnormally protrudes through that opening, compressing the spinal chord and impeding the flow of cerebral-spinal fluid to the rest of the nervous system. The pressure and the lack of fluid then triggers assorted bodily pains, tinglings, headaches, lethargy, etc. This condition is called "Chiari Malformation Syndrome" after Arnold Chiari, the physician who first document this condition.

Once the excess bone is removed, the surgeon will line the expanded opening with synthetic material. Relieving the pressure will restore the flow of cerebro-spinal fluid and alleviate all the related aches and pains.

Sometimes I feel tempted to reassure ourselves by saying that this is another "plumbing problem" and in a way it is, but it is so close to the spinal chord and the brain stem that we can't dismiss it as "routine". Although the condition by itself is not life-threathening, well, the surrounding area is critical and the surgery very serious. . . .

I respectfully request you remember her and my family in your prayers, in the Liturgy of the Hours and at Mass. I will be deeply thankful to all if you do.

I, too, will be praying that the Holy Spirit will be guiding the hands of the surgeon on the 5th, and that Mercedes will experience complete recovery.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us sinners.  We trust in Your love and abiding presence.  Comfort Mercedes, bless this lady with Your abiding presence in these days prior to her surgery.  Precious Holy Spirit, third Person of the Trinity, speak peace to Mercedes and assure her that she is in the palm of her Heavenly Father.  May there be such an overwhelming peace within Mercedes that all who know her will recognize she is aglow with the Holy Spirit.  Strengthen her in body, mind, will, and spirit that she enters that operation with confidence of her Heavenly Father's love for her.  I ask this in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Who live and reign forever and ever.  Amen

Darlene

Thanks to all for your prayers, on behalf of my friend and his wife.

Hi Roz,

Thanks for the explanation. It was a bit confusing; and a warm welcome to the forum. I hope you have found a solution to your health difficulties too.

Here is the happy praise report, as sent to me by my friend Pedro. Thanks so much for all your prayers:

--------------------------------

Fathers, Brothers and Sisters:

I am pleased to tell you that my wife, Mercedes, came through the surgery well. She spent the night in the PACU and just today was transferred to a regular, private room. She's resting comfortably, she walks, all the IV's have been pulled out and she is now resting comfortably. She's set to take her first solid food tonight. She's achy, somewhat disheveled, but doing good.

In fact, I invite you to send her your best wishes yourself via the wonders of the Internet! Click on the following link:

https://ecards.upmc.com/GetWell.asp

Her name is Mercedes Vega and the room number is D820. The card will be printed in color and routed to her.

I appreciate your thoughts and prayers for her. I am very thankful, we've really sensed them and I am convinced [they] were instrumental in bringing about a successful operation and now the way to recovery is set. May the Lord bless all of you.

So happy to hear this wonderful news, Dave.
He didn't give which hospital--required info by the e-card.
Maybe it's better not to give that sort of info on the open Internet.

Anyway, i rejoice with you.

Becky
