I've been visiting a lot of different Catholic sites and I'm seeing some what I would call "hardcore Catholics" who believe all Protestants who die as a Protestant will not be saved. I can never embrace this, I titled this thread because that's what I'm doing, I believe it is comming home for me, but after being gone for over 30 years, "home" is an unfamiliar place!

I can assure you, Mark, that the “hardcore” approach is hardly the official Catholic attitude. CHNI is dedicated to orthodox Church teaching and to personal aid without recrimination or hassle, not to ideologies such as those you mention.

What those "hardcore" catholics are saying is not in league with what the Pope teaches. The Catachism of the Catholic Church says it in black and white. If a Protestant is bapstized they can come straight into the Catholic Church so if they recognize the baptism (if trinatarian) then how can they say their going to hell? They are just not receiving full communion under the Pope the father of the church :). Hope this helps ya mark :). Your a real cool guy and I hold a lot of respect  for you, for even wanting to learn more about the Catholic faith.

All my best,

John

I'm looking forward to being in full communion w/the Church, untill then, I think I shall continue to learn and worship as a Catholic and leave final judgement up to God!

I've been back home a few times and after being gone for 30 years, it's a very unfamiliar place.  It doesn't matter whether I'm talking about where I was raised or where I worked or the church or school I attended or the people I was friends with.  Why should your faith be any different?

It's just a bit of a cultural shock, I mean I was only like 10 years old when I left, I really don't remember a lot, in fact, I really don't remember why we left.

When it appeared that the religion I was raised in had been started by a liar, theif and false prophetess, I felt "at sea". I still believed in all the members of the Trinity, good and bad and Christian responsibility. Then I read a book followed by 2 shelves of books followed by RCIA and it became evedent to me that the Catholic Church had the Gospel and the fullness of Truth. So, I didn't have any choice in the matter, I had to belong to it. AND ....... I have been happy ever since!!! I belong to a GREAT parish with terrific people, an excellent pastor and vicar and I look forward to Mass every Sunday.

I went to mass this morning, ran into a woman I knew years ago from an Episcapal church I used to attend, she came to the Catholic Church through reading Scott Hahn's book "Rome Sweet Rome." We had a nice chat, it seems a few from that church are "comming home."

Scott Hahn becoming a "God" in the Catholic Realm of Things???

I've been following this thread a bit, Scott has had little to nothing to do w/my return to the Church, though I intend to look into his work. I returned quite honestly because I've missed the Church, I don't even remember why we left, it was at around the age of ten or so when we stopped going regularly, then in my senior year of high school I fonund salvation in  sex ,drugs and rock-n-roll. What led to my return was reading "The Hound of Heaven" by Francis Thompson, I identified w/his opium addiction and I was quite moved and surprised by his experience in a Catholic monestary. Much of my time spent in Protestant land I was led to believe Catholics didn't know Jesus and the Church herself was apostate, though there may be a few misguided believers in the Church. I believed they worshiped Mary, not true, they worship a sinless pope, not true, they re-crucify Christ at every mass, not true..................and on and on it goes. I'm counting on having a deeper relationship w/Christ and the Church in the future, one that has eluded me much of my life.

And I’m counting on the grace of God to help you do just that, Mark. For the first time, I’m hearing some real hope in your voice. No matter how you stumble, no matter what the obstacles, just keep putting one foot in front of the other, and you’ll get there.

I identify with this a good deal.  I was away (post seminary no less!) for almost 10 years and most of those years were amazingly dark.

Coming back, I have joy and consolation that the return offers redemption to even those years.  I have learned things I can write about.  I "partied" with people who died from liver failure and drug overdoses.

It occured to me a few months ago at a daily Mass when I fixed my intention at the consecration for the repose of the souls of "Bob, Tom and Jerry" (OK, not their real names!) that had I never gone through those times and come back their might be no one praying for the repose of their souls this day.  Had I never strayed, there would be no one having Masses offered for them or remembering them daily in the rosary.

So don't look at those years as wasted, and always be willing to affirm holiness is real, expected and possible.

God wants Candlemas to be a saint - and he will provide for you!

Well I've made one descision, I've decided to stay here in Ohio for at least one more season, this was really stressing me out, so I just decided it best to stay for now.

That would be great?  You are in the Cleveland diocese, right?  Not Youngstown.

One foot in front of the other is what I'm endevouring to do this time, I got all geeked up last spring, and when things didn't happen as fast, or the way I thought they should, I got discouraged, plus all of what happened w/meeting my birth mother sent me in an emotional whirlwind.
