A very good article (and a very good ad, too).

I particularly enjoyed his take on the aftermath of Vatican II and the effect it had on young people:

Looking back, and knowing what I know now, I believe that the Church’s weakness was presenting the renewal movements as something new and not part of the Church’s theological traditions.

For someone like me, who was interested in both the spiritual and intellectual grounding of the Christian faith, I didn’t need the “folk Mass” with cute nuns and hip priests playing “Kumbaya” with guitars, tambourines and harmonicas. And it was all badly done.

After all, we listened to the Byrds, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, and we knew the Church just couldn’t compete with them.

But that’s what the Church offered to the young people of my day: lousy pop music and a gutted Mass. If they were trying to make Catholicism unattractive to young and inquisitive Catholics, they were succeeding.

What I needed, and what many of us desired, were intelligent and winsome ambassadors for Christ who knew the intellectual basis for the Catholic faith, respected and understood the solemnity and theological truths behind the liturgy, and could explain the renewal movements in light of these.

I think this is a concise explanation of a Church struggling to find its identity over the last 42 years, and is just coming into fruition now.  Historically it takes 50 years for the Church to fully assimilate the results of a major Council, and his statement reflects that reality.  After all, there have been renewal movements in the Church since the beginning, and we're reaching the culmination of a major one right now.  It is an exciting time to be a Catholic!

Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!

This story of his recent conversion really encouraged me to be courageous and face my fears, seeing how God has reached the heart of someone who was President of the Evangelical Theological Society.

God Bless

Bill

I have a friend whose return to the Catholic Church I pray for daily.  I sent her the link to this article and was interested in her response.  The part that struck me the most was WHY Beckwith returned to the CC, in spite of all the good he acknowledged in the Protestant church.  What stood out to her was all the ways the Protestant church did a better job of ministering to people.  Hmmmm

Dede,

I think what CajunRick wrote says much:

"I think this is a concise explanation of a Church struggling to find its identity over the last 42 years, and is just coming into fruition now.  Historically it takes 50 years for the Church to fully assimilate the results of a major Council, and his statement reflects that reality.  After all, there have been renewal movements in the Church since the beginning, and we're reaching the culmination of a major one right now.  It is an exciting time to be a Catholic!

I agree with your comment and Rick's. I believe that God is challenging us to apply the things that He has taught us over the years towards our brothers and sisters both within and without the Catholic Church. I am amazed at the huge explosion of evagelistic material being produced within the Church. I am also grateful for the reofrms within the seminaries and the rising up of colleges that emphsize the orthodoxy that has been the bedrock of the Faith for centuries. This IS an exciting time of renewal within the Church and seeing more and more ex and non-Catholics returning and coming into the Church is definitely something only God can do.

Yes, Lord continue to send Your Holy Spirit!

Bill

We were blessed in that he spoke at a conference we had here on the 21 & 22 of Sept.  His story was wonderful.  He is a very humble, down to earth type of guy.   We teased him a bit about being over our heads, but really he was able to bring it down to a very understandable thing.

His second talk was very good.  Now these are my notes and not his exact words and they are not that great, but you can get the gist of it...

One of his topics was of the title that was given to him, 'In America, Jesus is not Lord'. He thought it an odd title at first, but as he prayed it led him into teaching us about it. He used John 1:1, that Christ is Logos, the Word, existance of everything in knowledge itself depends on Christ Logos, but in our culture the debate is over reason and matter.   Along with Gen 1:1, the theological truth is absolute, it transmit dignity, ethics, absolutes, it all arrives from the Nature of God.

He went on to explain that our culture is a Dictorship of Revelatism, meaning that no one has truth, so everyone should be open minded, it is under the authority of each person.

So shared that this person presented this question to his professor. 'Well if no one has truth, why should we listen to anyone.'

The professor's responce was basically, 'only religion - especially the Catholic Church - cannot be true. That you can believe what you want, but not believe it is true.' Well you get the picture.
