| I am a cradle Anglican but when I was a teenager my mom had a huge fight with our parish priest and wouldn't let us go back- I then went by myself to another Anglican church about 5 miles away- my younger brothers & sisters fell away from the church and some of the became unitarians. I needed to get my Baptismal certificate so asked my mom for it, she doesn't have it ( it has benn 49 years) so I had to track it down which I have. My mom e-mailed me today to ask why I needed it and the e mails have been flying ever since- she wants to know : how I could join a church that doesn't believe in birth control, subjugates women, doesn't allow abortion, who's priests can't keep their hands off little boys, who's head person wore a brown shirt in the 40's and fought for the Germans....., let me see did I miss anything oh yes The final email- most insulting of all (to me personally)- " oh I just realized you are doing it for the church discount on school fees- I can understand that" Our children both go to Catholic school TBTG- but no I AM NOT DOING THIS FOR THE DISCOUNT which I won't even ask for unless the whole family comes with me. When the family found out that we were moving our kids to Catholic school I was asked by one sister how I could put my kids into the hands of perverted hatemongers and by another on how I could send them to a school that wasted an hour every day on unimportant things like religion. Needless to say I am upset tonight! We still have to tell my husband's Southern Babist family and I will need to tell the people at our current church so I just can't wait- not

I won't welcome you to the forum, Kim, because you've been around for a long time, but I will tell you we'll keep you in our prayers.
she wants to know : how I could join a church that doesn't believe in birth control, subjugates women, doesn't allow abortion,
Which, of course, would have described the Anglican church in the 30's, 50's, and 70's, until they changed their doctrine.
who's priests can't keep their hands off little boys,
Which, of course, could be said of the clergy of all faiths, as well as scout leaders, teachers, parents, etc.
who's head person wore a brown shirt in the 40's and fought for the Germans.....,
You do know that's not true, right?
Needless to say I am upset tonight! We still have to tell my husband's Southern Babist family and I will need to tell the people at our current church so I just can't wait- not
Your next few steps will be difficult. Our prayers will be with you.

Hoo boy, Kim! Welcome to Misconceptions 101. I don’t know a single convert that hasn’t experienced this at least to some degree (I certainly did), and I don’t know any way to avoid it if you are going to continue to have relations with the rest of mankind, especially relatives.
The good part is that sometimes — just sometimes — because of you these people will eventually begin to study and learn the truth, if only because they want to be able to prove to everybody, especially you, just how horrible the Catholic Church really is.
As Rick said, our prayers are with you.
David

David, "Misconceptions 101" is a great title because it is so true.
Dear Kim, I read your post and felt your pain. My family's vitriol has subsided since last summer; now, when we are together, it's like my conversion is the Big Elephant in the Room that everyone is aware of and no one talks about. It's easier to live with the elephant, but I wish that I could talk about it because my conversion is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I'm want them to know the truth! And I pray that some day they will be willing to hear with open hearts and minds.
I will pray for your and your family.
Elizabeth

Dear Kim,
Isn't it amazing how opinionated everyone is about the Catholic Church? If they only knew how wonderful the faith is...how rich, how TRUTHfull. I'll pray for you and your family along with the others, especially that they will journey on the path that you have. Everyone should be so blessed!
In His Love,
Chris, a.k.a. Christine Ann

| Weel I just had a conversion with my next oldest sister- Anytime their is a family fight she mediates with a non threatening topic - in our case sewing and knitting- however the conversation moved on to my joining The Church this Easter. I can't believe how far my family has fallen from our traditional Anglican roots to unitarianism. She asked me how any reasonable thinking adult could truly obey "some old guy in Europe" who tells people that they are not allowed to get abortions or use birth control- she went on to say "I hope that you won't forbid your daughter to use birth control" I said she is only 14 so yes I would REGARDLESS of where I spend my Sundays. Her answer was "well maybe not this year but surely by 15 you will be sensible and put her on the pill sice you are so against abortion" SHEESH. My family adopted my brother from abroad -he was a living product of an abortion clinic. Also they have donated money and had fund raisers to save the life of a baby born at 20 weeks so HOW can they the turn around and say on one hand it is okay to murder one 20 week old preborn baby yet put so much into saving another 20 week old baby? Don't they see how if one is worth heroic efforts surely the other is at least entitled to a minium of being allowed to be born?
