My dh was kind enough to dig up an un-used garden circle and replace the bricks in the center of our front yard for my dd and my Mary Garden.  I have the flowers I'm going to use, and a printout for what the flowers represent.  Now all I need is mulch to finish it, and a Mary statue.

The mulch I can handle myself ;)  But the statue if proving a bit more difficult.  I just want a small one, less than 12" preferably about 8".  And one that is inexpensive.  Most of the places I've checked, they are gigantic, and way expensive.  If they are small, I'm not sure if they are safe for outdoor use ???  Any links or recommended places I should check?

TIA!

Ali

Any good Catholic religious store should be able to help you, as well as any online merchant.  If you're not sure if it's suitable for outdoor use, write or call and ask them.

Would you say a little about what a Mary garden is?  What flowers are used and what do they represent?  EWTN's religious catalog has a number of outdoor statues of all sizes.

I got the info from this site http://www.mgardens.org/ , specifically, this article http://www.mgardens.org/BAMG-MG.html

This year we bought these plants: impatiens (Mother's love), marigold (Mary's gold), petunia (Our Lady's praise), snapdragon (Jesus' shoes, can you imagine little shoes for Jesus?  I love it!).  From seeds there will be lakespur (Mary's tears) and zinnias (the Virgin).

I have lots of room for flowers beds around the house, this one will be in the center of my front yard.  But instead of planting toward the road like I usually do, I'm planting towards the house so when I look out my big window in the living room I can see it clearly.

I just got the idea from Carolyn who was a newer member and posted a few posts, but haven't seen her for a week or so.  And apparently, these are not uncommon, at least around here.  But I hadn't heard of them until Carolyn mentioned her's.

This sounds heavenly!  EWTN has a 12" resin Our Lady of Grace Birdfeeder, it looks like a statue with a small bowl area at her feet for the birdfeed.  The plants are mostly for sunny areas except the impatiens, right?  I would love to try this.  I have a tree stump in the back yard where we had to have a big tree cut down, I could put a statue on that and plant around it. Thanks

I had to go take my son to work but now I'm back and I looked at the website you gave, it's fantastic.  I'm not much of a gardener but now that I'm not working much I have more time to give to the yard.  I love the idea of a Stations of the Cross garden.  Thanks Ali!

CatholicDestination.com has a lot of statues.  You might want to try looking there.

But don't try to plant around a tree stump.  The roots are terrible!  I had a hard time doing it.

I got a small Mary statue several years ago at Garden Ridge.

I'm in the process of planting ten rose bushes around the statue for a living rosary.  So far I have 7 planted.

Many years ago I saw a beautiful yard in Virginia Beach.  They had a rather large Mary statue (2-3 feet) lit at night with a blue floodlight.  It was gorgeous!
