I'd really like to begin reading more stories of the saints but I don't want to read a dry biography. What would keep me interested is something along the lines of what kids read: The story of the saint in story form. Is there a series or particular books that you've enjoyed? I know a lot of them are out there, but that's the problem - too many to choose from! I'm hoping you might help me narrow it down.
Thanks!
Jill

Your question made me think about some authors that I have really loved their books, they are not as popular as study type books as some, but they are wonderful people that love the church and their passion for our lord just jumps off the page at you. They are Bob & Penny Lord and they have the ministry "Journeys of Faith" and they also have a program on EWTN called "Super Saints", if you watch much on EWTN you'll surely recognize the Lords. They always say together at the end of their program "WE Love You" together and they just seem like wonderful genuine people.
Anyway, I've read several of their books and have really enjoyed them, they are not dull or dry and they just share wonderful aspects of the topics the write about. Their orthodoxy is up to the churches/EWTN's standards I believe and I think maybe you may enjoy their books.

They have "Saints and other powerful Men/Women in the church" they are two different books for a start. One on Men & one on Women
I have read "Mystics, visionaries & Stigmatist" and found it very interesting reading, with a chapter or so on each individual like short stories.
"Scandal of the Cross and its Triumph" is probably my favorite it's a book of herisies that are going on today and in the past. I also enjoyed the book "Visions of Heaven, Hell & Purgatory" that has all or most of the saints that have has such visions in it.
The Trilogy series is also a great one. "Treasures of the Church" that which makes us catholic. "Tragedy of the Reformation" and "Cults" Battle of the Angels. These three books are really very informational and yet not too long, I think they are great for beginners such as myself and think you may enjoy them too. Although I think your far more advanced in your knowledge than I am.
I hope you can find something you may enjoy, like I said their books are very easy reading and very passionate about the Church and the Eucharist of our Lord.

| Jill, I know what you mean about the biographies being a little hard to read. When I was reading the diary of St. Faustina it became so dark and heavy I had to put it down for awhile and read something totally secular and humorous, and then go back to Sr. Faustina later. I agree with Betty that Bob and Penny Lord write in a passionate and easy to read style. I think our catholic bookstore has a small section for teens that has books about the saints and they may be the type you're looking for. Also, Mother Angelica has not been declared a saint yet but she is in my humble opinion, and the book by Raymond Arroyo (sp?) about her is excellent. It doesn't read like fiction but it is so amazing that it's better than fiction! I lent my copy to the RCIA library and can't remember the full title, but it's something like "Mother Angelica: A Nun, Her Nerve, and a Network."

Thank you, Betty and Marsha. I guess I'm going to go to the bookstore and look first-hand and see what they have. It's so hard to choose a book from seeing only the cover, KWIM??

| God's peace. An especially interesting one is I, Francis by Carlo Carretto (Orbis Books). It is an interpretation of the life of St. Francis of Assisi, told in the first person. You can usually find copies on eBay, but it is in print and can be had from Amazon.com if you prefer. Blessings, ~Br_Carlo~ Last edited on Mon Jun 25th, 2007 12:07 am by Br_Carlo

I have to keep the list next to the PC, so I can keep up with the conversations, or I have to call my son in for a quick interpretation. I'll admit that Ms. Jill, sent me for a loop on that one. LOL

I know what you mean, I've ordered several books on the internet, only to find out when they arrive that they are very small and not quite what I was looking for. Plus, you don't have to pay as much in shipping if you go to the bookstore I also noticed that sometimes when I order off the web-pages that the prices are higher to begin with. Ther are several ministries I just want to support, so that will be my normal choices.
In our Catholic bookstore the books written by the Lords are in a section all by themselves, and other titles of different authors are divided by, mary, saints, apalogetics, etc. I'm not sure why they are all together no matter the topic, but It works for me. Just thought I'd let you know incase that's a standard library order or something.
Hope you find what your looking for
Betty

OK, Br_Carlo... I found one on Ebay and bought it! Sight unseen... I'll let you know how it is. The price was right!

God's peace--and sorry if my misspelling of Carlo Carretto's name got you sidetracked! I fixed it on my original post.
I doubt you'll be disappointed. I would acquaint myself with a thumbnail biography of the saint before the book arrives. Blessings, ~Br_Carlo~
