Many of us here have really benefitted from the tapes and CD's that are made available by so many wonderful catholic apostolates. Is it possible to set up a way to exchange them once we have listened?
Please also pray for my efforts to get our Knights of Columbus Council to sponsor distribution of recordings and literature defending the faith. Much of this is available from the Knights' HQ in New Haven.

Hi Monte -
We've set up a media center in our parish with a free lending library feature for CD's and DVD's. It wasn't clear to me whether you're thinking about a network / system for mailing tapes etc., to share with others (?).
With technology changing so quickly, it seems as though even those my age and some older are already familiar with the digital options like downloadable audio for computers and mp3's. The CD activity in our parish media center lending library has slowed noticeably since things shifted to online.
In addition to our media center, we've since made the adjustment on our parish website to serve all those who know and use the technology, providing links to audio downloads on the EWTN & Catholic Answers sites.
You sense the hunger for the faith and that's tremendous, - if only every parish had someone like you to get things going ! There are quite a few Vatican World Communications Day statements, along with USCCB resources directing parishes to get moving on these things ( see the U.S. Bishops 1999 statement on Adult Education for a great plan on all this ).
God bless !

Please keep in mind that whatever you do, it is not legal to vio iolate copyrights. For example, you can't strip the audio from a copyrighted CD and make it available for download, or copy it onto other CD's and distribute them.
Some outlets, such as the Mary Foundation, make free CD's available on various topics, but they do not permit you to copy them and give them to others. Also, may sites such as EWTN allow you to link back to their site, but not to download their audio and distribute it from your own web site or on CD. (I'm sure there would be no major problem with putting an individual program on a CD for a technologically challenged friend, as long as you didn't make a habit of it or do it in mass quantities, but you shouldn't put something on CD as part of a "lending library" unless you legally purchase it.)
I'm bringing this up because we have a tendency to forget copyright these days, and I believe that is a sin. When we make copies of something illegally, we are depriving the author of income to which he is entitled, and that is a violation of the commandment against stealing.
So if you do work out some kind of exchange, remember that you can only exchange the originals, not copies, unless you have permission to do so.

Rick -
Our parish lending library follows the guidelines set up by EWTN and Catholic Answers regarding their material, in addition, we requested and received additional written permission from them for our limited free use. Just wanted to be clear on that for you, as well as for others.
Both of these websites have stated policies regarding downloads as well.

Thanks Rick, I did not think about the copyright issues, actually, I hadn't thought this that far along yet, just wanted to ask for ideas. And certainly, we have to consider this. I have tried to explain to my own children and the children in CCD about copying CD's and the law. Not a popular topic.
And, as was pointed out, due to downloads, we don't use recorded materials as much as we used to do. Still, I have no MP3 player to take in the car, just a cassette tape or use a CD adapter.

I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding of the law is that we can legally copy material from one format to another as long as it is for our own personal use.
In other words, if you own a CD, you can make a cassette tape of the material to use in your car.
It is also legal to give, trade or sell the original copy of a copyrighted item, but you cannot keep a copy yourself, and it must include all material that came with the original (manuals, case, etc.).
So "trading" items, as you originally proposed, is perfectly acceptable, but making copies is not. I know your suggestion was to trade not copy, but sometimes well-meaning people offer things that turn out to be illegal, and of course CHN can't participate in such activites, so I just wanted to "head it off at the pass."
