Hi .... have any of you read the book "Liturgical Theology" by Simon Chan? A dear friend of mine, who just became RC at Easter, suggested I read it. The subheading is "The Church as Worshiping Community." This is my biggest difficulty with my present church - we are slowly leaving the beautiful, liturgical, worshipful service behind in favor of the more contemporary service. Having spent 25 years in a "contemporary, charismatic church" I have come to realize that the lack I always felt was the need and desire for true worship, with beautiful liturgy being a huge part of that experience. I have just gotten the book and not read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Just wondering if anyone here had read it.

I haven't heard of the book you mentioned, but I can recommend another. It's called A New Song for the Lord and it's by Pope Benedict XVI. It's a collection of talks he's given and essays he's written on the liturgy. The subtitle is Faith in Christ and Liturgy Today. A quote by Pope Benedict on the cover reads: "How we attend to liturgy determines the fate of the faith and the Church."
I underlined, starred and wrote in the margins a lot -- especially in the essays "Sing Artistically for God:" Biblical Directives for Church Music, and In the Presence of the Angels.
Here's a quote from the second essay:
In the celebration of the liturgy the Church moves toward the Lord; liturgy is virtually this act of approaching his coming. In the liturgy the Lord is already anticipating his promised coming. Liturgy is anticipated Parousia, the "already" entering our "not yet," as John described it in the account of the wedding at Cana. The hour of the Lord has not yet come; all that must happen is not yet fulfilled; but at Mary's--the Church's--request Jesus does give the new wine now and already bestows in advance the gift of his hour...it is not the case that you think something up and then sing it; instead, the song come to you from the angels, and you have to lift up your heart so that it may be in tune with the music coming to it...Earthly liturgy is liturgy because and only because it joins what is already in process, the greater reality.
