When our study using Steve Ray's "The Footprints of God" ends, I was thinking that it would be good for our group to study at least one of Paul's letters.  The group is at a beginning level, for the most part, or maybe slightly above.  (Steve's study will surely accomplish this!)

Romans would be too heavy, I think.  I was think that Colossians, Ephesians, or Philippians might be good.

Have any of you taught this sort of class or been in one?  What materials did you use?

I'd sure appreciate your input!

Jill

I think your Pauline idea is right on the money, Jill. You might check out the Ignatius Study Bible booklet on Philippians, Colossians and Philemon. The price is low enough that each member can have his own copy.

Jill,

Click here for Ignatius Catholic Study Bible -Philippians, Colossians, And Philemon

The price has dropped $2.00 since I ordered copies for the home Bible study I lead. Each participant has a copy. The RSV-2CE scripture text is at the top of the page. In a very small print below that you'll find Hahn's commentary on the verses. The book includes word studies, charts, outlines, and study questions for understanding and for application.

I'd suggest getting the leader a copy of The Navarre Bible: The Letters of Saint Paul. Commentaries on the bibliaclerus.org website are also helpful.

That sounds like something worth checking.  Becky, how do you run your study?  How much extra research do you need to do to make things run smoothly?  I used amazon.com to look inside the same study, but of Hebrews.  (This one you mentioned isn't set up for that at Amazon.)  The text is there, the notes at the bottom, and a few study questions at the end, right?  Did you lecture or take turns reading from the text or ... what??

Thanks!

Jill

Jill we are just finishing The Great Adventure Timeline series from Jeff Cavins - it is the best I have ever studied - and I have done a few - they also have one on Corinthians - it is study material and then a dvd from Jeff going over the material after you have done this in your group - sounds boring but trust me it is so informative - you can check this out at http://www.greatadventureonline.com

Marie,

Thanks.  I heard him on the radio once.  He IS good!  That is one I'm thinking about.   Is it just one main study, or smaller parts?   You mentioned the Timeline series, but that he has one on Corinthians.  When I go to the website, it's a little confusing.  Can you explain how it's set up?

Another one I looked at online is the Catholic Scripture Study, much of it written by Scott Hahn and Mark Shea.   Does anyone know anything about it??

Thanks!

Jill

Let's see if this works

Adventures in 1 Corinthians

The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in many of ways similar to our struggles today as Christians. With divisions, immorality, persecution and other trials of the faithful, the message of St. Paul to the Corinthians is a much-needed message for our own times. Adventures in I Corinthians will explore the key elements that the Apostle Paul introduced to a new and growing Church. St. Paul taught the Corinthians about the nature of grace and the Church as the Body of Christ. In addition, he introduced the Corinthian Christians to the most powerful gift of all, the Eucharist, which along with Christian virtue leads to a life of joy.

Study Materials: The 10-part video (DVD) program (also available in audio CD), the complete Study Set with questions responses.

Good it did - I copied this from the website

I suggest Marcus Grodi's study of Ephesians, which is  in progress on his Deep in Scripture radio program. He is about done with it. It can be downloaded for free to CDs from the web site or you can buy the CDs. Marcus' and Jim Anderson's insight is enlightening. It has changed my life.

One I am just now checking into is Catholic Scripture Study.  They have several shorter studies, also one on Ephesians.   It's written by Scott Hahn and Mark Shea.  Not bad!  I've printed out a sample lesson and it looks good.  Unfortunately, the short study doesn't have the DVD's, but that may be OK.  It's only 6 weeks long, I believe.  And only $20 for the text.

Anyone have any opinions in these studies??
