I'm reading a book by James Aikin called "The Salvation Controversy" It's the second time I've read it and I'm getting more out of it this time.

I've noticed that some question's other's have asked are the same ones addressed by Mr. Aikin in this book.  It's small and easy to read.

Questions relating to salvation--especially faith versus works, but also penance, purgatory, indulgences, and free cooperation with God's grace--have been sore points in the dialogue between Catholic and Protestants.  Mr. Akin knows and respects the protestant tradition in which he was raised and the Catholicism he has come to embrace.  He is not about to falsify either or to pretend that crucial differences do not exist.  Bet he is also unwilling to allow theological slogans (such as "faith alone") to distract us from significant points of agreement.  His method is to follow Scripture and Tradition whereever they lead--and he is formidably equipped for the task--with honesty, clarity of mind, and an abundance of logical skill.   Ronald K. Tacelli, S.J., Boston College

Betty,

Is this book an easy read?  Also, does it explain the Catholic view on salvation, ie. Baptism?  I am struggling a bit with this since I have always held to Believer's Baptism.  Anyway, do you think it is a good book to understand the true teaching of salvation according to the Christain faith?

Darlene:

"The Salvation Controversy" is a very easy read, Quite small at 143 pages.  It's not really about Baptism though, It's more along the lines of Sanctification & Justification, The life long process of it.  It's also very charitable to the protestant christian point of view and clears up some mis-understanding's that we have with one another.

James Akin is an ex-protestant, He does not write negatively against protestant views.  He explains where we go wrong in are use of vocabulary.  He goes into are mis-understanding's of Temporal Salvation & Eternal Salvation.  He talk's about indulgences in this book to, He uses scripture throughout to show what the Catholic church teaches and why.

For me personally, I had a really hard time figureing out Baptism.  I'm not sure why I struggled with it so badly, But I did.

I think the best book I read regarding and explaining very throughly Baptism, The different forms ect, Is "Crossing the Tiber" by Steve Ray:  http://catholicconvert.com/Default.aspx?tabid=100

It really took me through some necessary study to understand Baptism.  Here is a link to some more of Mr. Ray's writing which you can view, download & print for study.  This one is a discussion between a protestand brother & his Convert Catholic Sister, It includes scripture and "The Early Church Father's".  http://catholicconvert.com/Portals/0/Documents/PastorBobBaptism.doc

I really enjoy and learn a great deal from Mr. Ray's books and writings, He's been on EWTN programs too.  I don't hear other's talk about him that much, But he's been very much a part of my conversion.  I grew up in a Baptist Church, We left when I was about 13.  I had learned and held many beliefs from my youth But really did not know exactly why.  Things like Baptism, The Lords Supper being simbolic and that Baptism by emersion only, And that Baptism only being a public simbolic gesture basically being a public commitment to your faith and not really being necessary, Etc. I rejected infant Baptism and believed in waiting until the age of Reason, Then I looked at my own son's as pre-teen to teenager's and saw that they were anything BUT reasonable.  I observed them and it was about the time they quit tying their shoe's and their pant's started to hang down.  I even went through a very stupid liberal period that I thought children should have the freedom to Choose their faith.  I'll spend the rest of my life in repentance and sadness over such a horrible choice I had made.  (But that's another very long topic).  When I prayed in anguish about my choice and asked the Lord what I should believe about Baptism, All the Holy Spirit said to my heart was, "Why would you purposely choose to be recklass with the soul's of your pecious sons".  Having been baptised myself at 40 yrs old.  I now know that it is far more than simbolic.  My husband was baptised as an infant and now I recognize things about him that I'm certain are due to his infant baptism.  I do completely understand the confusion that a person can go through because of Baptism, I pray you'll find the answers that the Lord is trying to give you.

Also here is a link to the rest of Mr. Ray's writings, There are more on Baptism and many other topic's.  http://catholicconvert.com/Default.aspx?tabid=83

I'm so glad your here with us and trying to make sense of it all.  It's really hard sometimes to let go of somethings we've held onto most or all of our lives.

God Bless you on your journey & I've also been praying for peace in your home

Betty
