Like many converts, the example of our late Holy Father John Paul II inspired me to seek out what the Catholic Church was truly about.  This biography goes into historical, philosophical and theological detail that leaves the reader with a greater sense of understanding not only how events transpired, but why.  The Holy Father even once said he read parts of the biography himself to remember his earlier life.

But, keep in mind this is not light reading (886 pages paperback).  That being said, I enjoyed the fact that it was long and detailed.  I must admit, my limited philosophical background made it difficult to grasp some sections describing a man with mulitple degrees in philosophy.

What is also important about this biography is that it is indexed in a way that specific events, people or issues can be looked up and referenced easily.  Therefore, you need not read it cover to cover in order to appreciate the work of Mr. Weigel.

It's for sale on Amazon.com for as little as $.01, so I encourage everyone find out for yourself what made  John Paul II one of the true giants of the 20th century.

Boy, do I fully agree about your assessment of Weigel's opus on John Paul the Great, but -- ouch! -- only for a penny at Amazon?

That's sort of what I thought the libs who donned sackclothe and ashes the wonderful day Joseph Ratzinger was elected to Peter's Throne, would've given for any pre-Benedict XVI book

But it's a penny more than I'd pay for a Kung or "liberation theology" book.

Weigel's The Cathedral and the Cube* (about the fading of Christianity in Europe, as it's being assaulted by both secularized beaureaucrats within the EU and radical Islam.  It's not for the faint of heart.

It could also be The Cube and the Cathedral, so mea culpa. (But please cut me some slack as it's almost midnite.)
