Thomas Keating is a Trappist monk who has written many books, esp. on contemplative prayer.

Does anyone know anything about his books? Are they recommended? Do they adhere to orthodox Catholic teaching?

Ruthie, unfortunately I don’t consider Keating a reliable source of orthodox spiritual doctrine. He is one of the inventers of Centering Prayer. You can see what I have to say about that topic here.

David, I read that entire thread, and you certainly covered the subject very thoroughly. It does answer my question. Thanks.

Ruthie -

I would like to add that Fr. Keating and his teaching on this do not represent the Trappist Order.  The main Trappist promoters of the so-called Centering Prayer movement, along with Fr. Keating are; Fr. William Menninger and the late Fr. Basil Pennington.

The retreats I've attended at the Trappist Monastery near me ( over the last 20 yrs. or so ) , regardless of whoever the particular Retreat Master is, is typically based on / covers :

The scripture readings from that day's Mass
The Catechism / Church History
The saints
The importance of regular daily prayer
Frequent participation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

God bless.
