St. John Chrysostom Homily 86 on John

Me-thinks that while she was speaking, Christ suddenly appearing behind her, struck the Angels with awe; and that they having beheld their Ruler,9 showed immediately by their bearing, their look, their movements, that they saw the Lord; 10 and this drew the woman’s attention, and caused her to turn herself backwards. To them then He appeared on this wise, but not so to the woman, in order not at the first sight to terrify her, but in a meaner and ordinary form, as is clear from her supposing that He was the gardener.

St. John Chrysostom goes on to explain that the Lord was gently leading Mary to an understanding of who He was and of how it was no longer appropriate to respond to Him in the familiar manner used while He had been in the flesh.

Homily 86 was a blessing to me; I wanted to share it with you.

A second passage from Homily 86 Gospel of John by St. John Chrysostom:
Methinks that she wished still to converse with Him as before, and that in her joy she perceived nothing great in Him, although He had become far more excellent in the Flesh. To lead her therefore from this idea, and that she might speak to Him with much awe, (for neither with the disciples does He henceforth appear so familiar as before,) He raises her thoughts, that she should give more reverent heed to Him.

The bibliaclerus URL in the post above does not take one directly to commentary.
Here's one below from the New Advent website that will take you directly to Homily 86 on the Gospel of John by St. John Chrysostom.

I have been so moved, in reading this homily, by the gentleness of our Lord in leading us to a recognition of His presence and needed changes in the ways we respond to Him.

Dave,

Glad to know I'm not the only one blessed by this homily.

BTW, you've been doing some pretty marvelous preaching yourself lately!

Wow!

"Preaching"? Dunno about that, but thanks for the kind words and praise God :bowing: if someone occasionally benefits from the scribblings of this sinful vessel. :eyeroll:
