These verses at the very end of the Bible say that no one shall add or remove anything from the Bible. How on eart do protestants then justify removing whole books, chapters and verses from the Bible?!! I know that I should perhaps be answering that question, as a protestant, but I have no answer! Has anyone come across a protestant justification for removing the books that they did? I mean, surely even if a protestant rejected infalliability, and lets say they beleived the Catholic Church was in great error by the Reformation, that doesnt justify removing books from the Bible when we're instructed not to! If they wanted to get away with it, they should have removed these verses too!
And once one accepted that the so called 'Apocrypha' were part of the Bible, they cant miss the obvious refernces to things like purgatory that are in these books... which should inevitably lead them to realise there are even more things wrong with their faith and its teachings.
(All seems so logical to me now, but I sure know that the protestant faith seemed so logical to me too about 12 months ago!)

Leah, I’ve actually seen Protestants use this passage to condemn Catholics for “adding to” scripture by our acceptance of tradition and magisterium. But this is a crass assumption based on their own acceptance of scripture alone.
The fact that historically the Protestants did indeed remove books from the Old Testament, and yet more were proposed to be removed from the New Testament by Martin Luther, seems to have no impact on them. Indeed, some of the bolder anti-Catholics go so far as to accuse the Catholic Church of adding the “extra books” found in the Catholic bible by decree at the Council of Trent. In other words, they don’t even know their own history.

I used to always read that verse as what we are discussing. The idea of adding something to the bible. This makes some sense because it is after all in the Bible as e know it.
But these days I wonder about the context and the fact that this is written in one book written (I think) by John. Meaning, Is John really saying it is impossible to add anything to the Bible? I think he is saying that nobody better add anything or mess with the book he is writing, the book of Revelation. I think He is saying that what he has received was to be passed down in tact exactly as it was revealed to him in his vision. I do not see it as saying that nothing can be added to the bible, though since it is like the last part of the whole bible, I do wonder if it makes sense to read it both ways.
Regardless, I am not saying I think it should be ok to add to or take away from the scriptures. Not at all! I am glad to agree that we should not do so. However, I think the main reason we know that the canon of scripture is closed and that nothing may be added was because the church has declared it so.
