Hi,
I don't know if this is the right forum for this question so please direct me to the correct forum if it is not.
What is the patriarch, Abraham's, ancestry? What were his beliefs before the True God revealed Himself to Abraham?
Thanks in advance.

Abram’s ( = Abraham’s) genealogy can be found in Genesis 11. According to what we see in Genesis 12, there is no record of his “coming to believe,” simply that the true God called him and he obeyed. The Navarre Bible Commentary, however, mentions that “this divine calling… involves a break with the idolatrous cult followed by Abraham’s family in the city of Haran (apparently a moon cult) so as to worship the true God.” This information apparently comes, not from the bible, but from archeology, for the location of Haran is known.
It was not until Abram was 99 years old (Genesis 17) that God gave him the covenant of circumcision, the land of Canaan, the definitive promise of a son who would be the father of a “a multitude of nations” and the new name Abraham.

Time magazine had a cover story on Abram/Abraham in September of 2002. I'm not sure if it's available to everyone (I'm a subscriber) but the article is here.
As always with the popular media the faith side of the article may be questionable, but Time is usually pretty good about the historical aspects.
