Many thanks.

One of the many blessings of the Catholic faith is that we don't have to constantly reinvent the wheel.  Regardless of what we seek, others have been there before.  Even the links I gave you that reference the Early Fathers demonstrate the continuity of belief, and if you look beyond the name "purgatory" (which is indeed a western term) you will find an amazing continuity of belief between east and west.  So "purgatory" is a scripturally based reality, belief in which was held by all Christians until the Protestant revolution threw it out with the bath water.

I understand that Protestants often demand proof in scripture for every little thing, but I often want to scream, "The burden of proof is on you!  You're the ones who changed the doctrine!"  :)

I have a web page on this topic, that contains many papers. I'll also soon be adding to my blog the chapter on purgatory from my book, A Biblical Defense of Catholicism.

Thank you for your  most informative website link  Dave.

The reason I raised the question about Purgatory is that protestant  friend  questioned me about it.  I must admit I am not well informed on the subject and  could not respond straight away,  and did not know there were so many references  to purgatory in the Bible.

God Bless

It's a tough one to get through to them. Best wishes! Don't ever be reluctant to admit you don't know something if you don't. None of us know all things, so there is no shame in saying that, in the course of our sharing our faith with others.
