I found a cool timeline at this site:  http://www.bibleclassesonline.com/Bibletimeline.pdf
And I'll probably use it, but it is protestant.  The number of OT books adds up to 39 and the Maccabees are missing from the timeline, but otherwise it's a great one-page visual that I'd like to use in the Bible study.  (Now if someone knows of something comparable and CATHOLIC, please let me know!)

It describes 5 divisions of the OT:
Law
History          Tobit   Judith     1 and 2 Maccabees
Poetry/Wisdom          Wisdom   Sirach
Major Prophets           Baruch
Minor Prophets

I have made a guess (but I'd rather not) where the 7 deuterocanonicals go, but I'd be grateful if someone who knows for sure would place those for me.

Also, if anyone knows of a brief summary of the theme of each of the 46 books, I'd sure love to give that to my class, too.

Thanks!

When I was a sponsor in RCIA, we used a book called "We Believe...A Survey of the Catholic Faith" by Oscar Lukefahr, C.M. which is cross-referenced to the Catechism.

At is a great book, not very long (200 pages), and has an accompanying workbook.  Chapters 2 and 3 go through each of the books of the bible with a very brief summary.  I think the book is only about $8 and well worth the money!

You might also find some helpful information on Scott Hahn's bible study page here:

Hi Jill,

I think your classification is correct, except perhaps that tobit would better fit into the poetry / wisdom category.

I found a Protestant summary of books of the Bible (Cliff's Notes, actually!).

Here are non-Catholic summaries from Wikipedia and Catholic articles from the Catholic Encyclopedia for each of the seven deuterocanonical books:

Tobit (or, Tobias) (Wikipedia article / Catholic Encyclopedia entry)

Judith  (Wikipedia article / Catholic Encyclopedia entry

1 Maccabees  (Wikipedia article / Catholic Encyclopedia entry)

2 Maccabees  (Wikipedia article / Catholic Encyclopedia entry)

Wisdom  (Wikipedia article / Catholic Encyclopedia entry)

Sirach (Ecclesiasticus)  (Wikipedia article / Catholic Encyclopedia entry)

Baruch  (Wikipedia article / Catholic Encyclopedia entry)
