Jill, in Genesis 48
Shortly before dying, Jacob tells Joseph that Joseph's two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, will be his (Jacob's) sons, while additional sons born to Joseph will belong to Joseph. Jacob includes Manasseh and Ephraim as sons in the inheritance decisions.
--a double blessing for Joseph.
You can find interesting information about this development on the bibliaclerus website. It's too long to be a legal quote here. I'll just say that the younger son taking precedence over the firstborn (seen with Jacob and Esau) is repeated, knowingly this time, as Jacob chooses to prefer the younger over the older of Joseph's sons.
St. Augustine's commentary about the prophecy and symbolism involved is worth reading.

Choose Genesis.
Look in left column in The Profession of Faith box to choose Augustine.
Back to the right-hand side to choose Augustine: City of God.
Scroll down to 130, chapter 42 (final paragraph).

Gooday:
You have identified a point that I have previously researched with great interest. Ephraim and the tribe of Dan are not mentioned in the Book of Revelation. Epraim was the younger brother of Mannaseh, and both were children of Joseph born to Joseph while his father Israel was with Joseph in the land of Egypt.
See the Book of Exodus regarding the blessings Isarael bestowed upon the twelve sons/tribes, and the "adoption" of Joseph's two sons as equal to Israel's other sons. Israel connects Dan with the serpent, and it has long been held that antichrist will be decended from the tribe of Dan.
While Ephraim, the younger son, receives the blessing from Israel's "right hand" and told that he will be "greater". It has long been held that Ephraim represents the "Church" and specifically Ephraim represents the triumph of the Church in the end times.
Therefore in Revelation Ephraim and Dan are not directly mentioned by name, while both Joseph and Manasseph are mentioned by name. The key to understanding is contained in the Book of Exodus. Will

Good day:
This is a correction to my previous reply. I referred to the Book of Exodus and should have referred to the Book of Genesis. The blessing of Israel upon Joseph's two sons is in Genesis and not Exodus. Will

Thank you, William and Becky. Very helpful.
You don't happen to know how 10 tribes came to be called "Israel," while the other land-holding tribe remained simply "Judah," do you??
Again, I thank you for your help.
Jill

Good day:
The 10 tribes of the Northern Kingdom were called Israel, while the other two tribes, Benjamin and Judah, were known as the Kingdom of Judah. The Temple was located in the land of Judah. Note, only Benjamin and Joseph had the same mother.
Israel fell into idolatry and "United Kingdom," the northern kingdom and the southern kingdom, ceased to exist when Israel was taken into captivity. I see similarities between the United States and the Biblical United Kingdom that I won't mention at this time.
In the Middle East there is a political entity called Israel, but it has long been held that the Catholic Church is the "new Israel of God."
