Good evening
Can anyone tell me what the qualifications to become a Doctor of the Church?
Do you have to be a saint?
Does it happen always after death?
Thank You
BBT

From what I’ve seen, the qualifications are a bit vague. There is room to consider any saint whose writings are found to be of great service to the Church as a whole.
This link will help you to understand the historical background of the designation and some of the qualities considered when deciding who is worthy of this honor.

Here is another site where you can get that answer in simple readable format.
http://www.catholictreasury.info/saints.htm This is an excellent site. I go there to read from their online books written by Great Catholic writers including those from very early church.

It’s good that you have recommended this site, Maryellen. It’s one of my favorites, too, and deserves to more widely known.
