Coming in late on this thread, but I'm curious and thought I'd stick my nose in.
NC, you sound a lot like me. I've been reading and investigating the RC church for almost ten years now (started out with Chesterton, whom I'd never heard of until 1996, and I will bravely and humbly admit that the fact that GKC was also fat and also smoked cigars spurred the initial interest...)
Although I'm seriously convinced that the RCC is the church Christ started, and I've blown by most of the doctrinal problems through the works of Dave Armstrong, Scott Hahn, et al., I confess to looking for reasons to toss the whole line of inquiry.
Mostly, I find myself stumped by my Virginia Baptist background. We were still trying to "convert" Catholics when the rest of the Protestant world had moved on to trying to stop the exodus of their membership through things like "contemporary worship services" and post-modernism cool-guy lingo.
The last excuse I used was JPII holding a down-home prayer meeting with folks from other religions -- don't know where I stumbled across that.
What I learned about myself was that, when all is said and done, I was looking for any and every excuse to cancel the mission so I wouldn't have to face the very real and very painful ramifications of converting -- family, wife, friends who will certainly disapprove.
Frankly, in the process of overcoming doctrinal objections to Mariology, the real presence, etc., I learned that, like GKC said somewheres, if I can trust the Church in 99 things, I can take the 100th on faith.
If you're still posting and reading the replies, I'm curious if this resonates with you at all.
I appreciate the seriousness with which you handle faith issues.

Since I'm a cradle Catholic I can't really say it resonates with me but I'm sure there are many others here who have had the same issues. I remember hearing Alex Jones' testimony when he discovered that the early Church was, in his word, "C-c-c-c-c-c-c-atholic!". Your story reminded me of his in so many ways, and countless others I've read.
I appreciate the seriousness with which you handle faith issues.
Our faith is very serious to us. Welcome to the forum.

My interest in the Catholic Church started because I was also looking for authentic Christianity I grow very sick also of the contemporary worship and cool guy lingo. I grow up in a very conservative Pentecostal home I grow to hate Charismatic Christianity it just seemed so fake to me more about showing off.
What I learned about myself was that, when all is said and done, I was looking for any and every excuse to cancel the mission so I wouldn't have to face the very real and very painful ramifications of converting -- family, wife, friends who will certainly disapprove.
Most of My family played it very cool when I started going to the Catholic Church my mother even wanted to go with me but never did she thinks the catholic Church is a dead Church that has no life in it.
Although I'm seriously convinced that the RCC is the church Christ started, and I've blown by most of the doctrinal problems through the works of Dave Armstrong, Scott Hahn, et al., I confess to looking for reasons to toss the whole line of inquiry.
For me I have become convinced that the Orthodox Church is the Church that christ started. I have fell in love with Holy Orthodoxy the first time I went to a Divine Liturgy I was in awe I have never seen somthing so Beautiful.
God bless
