Hello,

I am a person with a strong plymouth brethren, "John Darbian" background being drawn to the Catholic Church. I have reconciled many of my initial skepticism such as the communion of saints, transubstantiation, infant baptism, Intercession of the Saints, Purgatory etc... however I still have three major hang-ups that I am struggling with.

The first is papal infabillity, and the infabillity of the church as a whole. I do understand that a Pope's teachings or actions can be considered innfallible in only a few cases. But how could the Pope and magesterium fail as a whole during the Spanish Inquisition and other atrocities, if she can not err?

The other is the dogma concerning Mary. The Immaculate Conception I think I can accept, being the Theotokos God would make her a clean vessel to give life to his Son. However, how could Mary's entire life have been sinless when Scripture teaches us that "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God?"

Thirdly, I still have some questions concerning the Sacrament of Confession, I do grasp that the Priest is Persona Christie in the confessional, but does the church view confession as the ONLY way a person's sin is forgiven. Do prayers directly to God for forgiveness "count"? Is the Sacrement of Confession a way to perform the penance necessary for temporal punishment.

Please excuse me as I have twenty plus years of evanglicism with me!

Pray for me ,

Dexter

Dexter, first of all, let me welcome you to CHN.  Your questions are welcomed here.  However, you asked three questions  on different topics, so I'm going to repost your questions into individual messages in the proper areas.  The question on infallibility will remain here; the question on Mary's sinlessness will go into the area on Mary and the Saints, and the question on Confession will go into that area.

Please understand that the reason is for organizational purposes, so that future seekers will find answers in the proper area.  I hope you understand and accept my reason, and please don't take this negatively.

Thanks for asking, and I look forward to the answers that are given to you.

To all others, please look for these questions posted under my name in the proper message area!
