In Need of a Good Shepherd . .

450 Sheep Jump to Their Deaths in Turkey
The Associated Press
ISTANBUL, Turkey

First one sheep jumped to its death. Then stunned Turkish shepherds, who had left the herd to graze while they had breakfast, watched as nearly 1,500 others followed, each leaping off the same cliff, Turkish media reported.

In the end, 450 dead animals lay on top of one another in a billowy white pile, the Aksam newspaper said. Those who jumped later were saved as the pile got higher and the fall more cushioned, Aksam reported.

"There's nothing we can do. They're all wasted," Nevzat Bayhan, a member of one of 26 families whose sheep were grazing together in the herd, was quoted as saying by Aksam.

The estimated loss to families in the town of Gevas, located in Van province in eastern Turkey, tops $100,000, a significant amount of money in a country where average GDP per head is around $2,700.

"Every family had an average of 20 sheep," Aksam quoted another villager, Abdullah Hazar as saying. "But now only a few families have sheep left. It's going to be hard for us."

This article inspires many ideas:

1. What exactly was Jesus saying when He called us sheep?

2. Despite shepherds, these sheep went off the cliff -- yet some want to say that given a book, sheep can guide themselves.

3. Some who went the wrong way (off the cliff) were saved -- coincidence or God's intervention on their behalf?

4. Mostly it shows that because one sheep jumped and a whole lot followed, does not mean it is a good idea nor was it a reformation.

It also shows how badly sheep need the Good Shepherd to guide them, else the hierlings will misguide them and both will fall in a pit.  How gullible and ignorant sheep can be.  And thus they need a shepherd.  Of course, Protestants only take it this far.  But, if they would just ponder on this a little deeper, they would come to realize that all Protestants claim to be following the Good Shepherd.  And yet, many hold to false doctrines and practices.  So, what is the problem?  They fail to realize, and in some cases accept, that God has provided earthly shepherds in the form of the Magesterium, to guide the sheep.  Sheep, left to their own devices, will go off in several directions, many perishing because they are devoured by wolves, or wounded, or caught in bramble and die.
