First of all, Elizabeth, welcome to the Coming Home Network. We're glad to have you here with us. In your profile you state that you are from the Orthodox community. If you truly mean the Orthodox Churches (Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, etc.) then you should understand the concept of Theotokos ("God-bearer") which is so fundamental to Orthodox theology.
Put simply, the title "Mother of God" was given to Mary in answer to an early heresy which claimed that Jesus' Divine and human natures were divisible. In other words, Jesus was not truly God and truly man, and that Mary was the mother of only the human Jesus, not the Divine Jesus. This implies that Jesus could somehow be divided and that he was not the perfect unity of God and man. This heresy (Arianism) was rejected in 431 at the Council of Ephesus, and the title "Mother of God" was given to Mary not to honor her, but to emphasize the true unity of God and man in the person of Jesus her Son. Like all of Mary's life, she is honored for being the mother of her Lord (Luke 1.43).
Catholics United for the Faith have a Faith Fact that explains this title of Mary as the "first Marian dogma" which in fact defines and defends the Divinity of Christ.
By the way, we do not call her "mother of Jesus" because that implies that the human Jesus can somehow be divided from the Son of God, and that simply isn't so. That is Arianism, a heresy rejected by all Christians.
Once again, welcome to the Coming Home Network. We're happy to have you here with us, and we look forward to having you share your faith story with us when you're ready to do so.

David has pointed out to me that I have confused Arianism and Nestorianism. Arianism claimed that Christ wasn't divine at all, and was condemned at the Council of Nicea in 325, while Nestorianism claimed that Mary was the mother of Jesus but not the mother of God, and that was condemned at Ephasus in 431.
Being a cradle Catholic, I admit I have trouble keeping the heresies straight. The CUF Faith Fact I cited above does handle the matter correctly.
I will resist the temptation to say that David enjoyed correcting me, but if the shoe fits.....
I assure you, this is not the first time it has happened, and it will certainly not be the last!

| Thank you for the reply and God bless you too.Its quiet funny actually, coz i really do not know the theological part of catholic faith, to be frank not either the orthodox one but i only know that from my experiences that i have a beautiful mama (MOTHER MARY) , to look up to through all the good and bad times in my life.I can feel her presence by my side through the different people she sends in my life. She has always protected me and i am sure, is always interceding for me before her son.

We actually do call her the mother of Jesus. But since Jesus is God, her title is "Mother of God".
495 Called in the Gospels "the mother of Jesus", Mary is acclaimed by Elizabeth, at the prompting of the Spirit and even before the birth of her son, as "the mother of my Lord". In fact, the One whom she conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Father's eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly "Mother of God" (Theotokos).
Sincerely,
Juan
