I have heard or seen mention a couple of times of the "Blue Army" in connection with the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Does anyone know what the significance of blue is?  I know she is often pictured wearing blue.  I just purchased a rosary bracelet with blue beads; I chose the blue because of what I have connected in my mind with her.  I will be going back to my office job at the school tomorrow and will be wearing it everyday to help pass the time!  Maybe I'll get to explain to someone what it is.

From the web site of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima:

The World Apostolate of Fatima/Blue Army is a worldwide public association of the faithful, responding to the requests that Our Blessed Mother made to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917, to help save souls and bring peace to the world. It promotes Eucharistic prayer and the Rosary, as well as penance, especially the generous acceptance of the duties of our state in life.

The World Apostolate of Fatima offers a variety of spiritual programs. These range from the Prayer Cells, where individuals meet for weekly prayer in the Parish or home setting, to the Parish First Saturday Devotions, All Night Vigils, and a Sacred Heart Home Enthronement Program and Family Consecrations to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These and other programs can revitalize and strengthen the faith of participants in local Church communities.

What is a Public Association of the Faithful?

Only a public association can receive a mission to teach Christian doctrine in the name of the Church, promote public worship or pursue a purpose which by nature is reserved to ecclesiastical authority (canon 301 ยง1). As a public association, the members act in the name of the Church when fulfilling the purpose of the association.

As for the color blue, Mary has appeared in blue in most apparitions.  I have a beautiful poem on my Inspirations site that is a prayer to our Blessed Mother:

To Our Lady

Lovely Lady dressed in blue,
Teach me how to pray!

God was just your little Boy,
Tell me what to say!

Did you lift Him up sometimes,
Gently on your knee?

Did you sing to Him the way
Mother does to me?

Did you hold His hand at night?
Did you ever try

Telling stories of the world?
O! And did He cry?

Do you think He really cares
If I tell Him things?

Little things that happen?
And do the angels' wings

Make a noise? And can He hear
me if I speak low?

Does He understand me now?
Tell me -- for you know!

Lovely Lady dressed in blue,
Teach me how to pray!

God was just your little Boy,
And you know the way.

In what apparition was Mary first seen in blue?  I, like Credo Catholic, have always wondered why Mary is seen as dressed in blue.

I believe she was dressed all in white at Lourdes, don't know what year that was.  I think I'll do some googling but I'm not real good at it!

It appears that she was seen in apparitions in a bright light or "globe" of light.  I wonder if artists sort of assigned blue and white to her through the centuries.  I seem to remember being told that the white stood for purity but I'm not sure about the blue, maybe honor?  If I find anything I'll post!

I don't know.  I may simply be assuming that this is "typical".  I was taught this as a child, and it may well not be true that she "usually" appeared in blue.

Mary as the Immaculate Conception is the patroness of the United States, and so the most common statue of her we see in this country is of our patroness.  As such, she is usually seen here dressed in blue.  I don't know if that's true in other countries.

IRT Mary being shown in blue at all times, I had read once (from a non-Catholic source) that Mary is always supposed to have blue robes on.  I meant to ask here about if that was true and why, but kept forgetting.  From the other responses, it must not be true.

I found this link and like how it was written, although it appears to be more opinion than church teaching ;)
http://asksistermarymartha.blogspot.com/2006/08/meet-parent.html

Especially this part:
Way back when the official way to adopt a child, right in the court room, was to drape your cloak around the child. That was the sign to everyone that the child was now yours. Blue is the color of the sky which is over all of us. Mary's blue cloak is a sign that she adopts us all.
