I got this question from my dad, and I was not exactly sure how to answer it, or if his understanding is basically on the right track or not. Can someone help me. Here is the question.

"I believe she has powers of her own as awarded by Her Son. I don't think she is merely an intercessor to Jesus, but can make differences when called upon, having already been given powers by her Son. We say the hail Mary with that in mind don't we? Rich wants to put Mary and the Navigator who helped save me in the same category. I want to respond and differentiate between the two. Please assist."

To me it is sort of one in the same. Her intercession is powerful, and when she does act on her own, it is simply in line with God's will anyway. And that we can call upon her for help, but it is best to realize the help we are looking for is that of intercession, and that we often attribute our victories to her because she is the one who we think helped us obtain the favor, she did not on her own act to save us independently. How do I best describe this? So in a sense we call upon her because she is powerful, but her power is what is granted by her as an intercessor in prayer, yet when we have so many mircles and apparitions it seems like she sort of does show up in situations to powerfully dsiplay God's will in a situation. How do I describe the difference?

No one in heaven can do anything except that which God grants them the will to do.  Mary and the saints cannot even hear our prayers unless it is granted by God for them to hear.  They are certainly unable to answer except according to God's will.

Mary is an intercessor for us because it pleases God to allow her to intercede.  St. Anthony can help find lost objects because it pleases God to allow him to do so.  St. Jude is the patron of impossible cases because it pleases God to grant him that ability.  But neither Mary nor the saints nor the angels can do anything except through the power of God.

When we walk into an art gallery, we give the artist the highest praise by admiring his creations.  When we honor Mary and the saints and angels, we give the Divine Artist the highest praise by admiring and honoring his creation.
