| On a liturgical calendar, I noticed that because St. Patrick's Day falls on Holy Week, this year, apparently it and other saint's days are not celebrated, or that was my understanding of it. Is that true? Of course, I realize that St. Patrick's Day has also become somewhat of a secular day, as well, and that some people are going to use it as an excuse to eat Irish stew, drink green beer and so forth as they "celebrate" the day. However, will the church not celebrate or honor the day at all, despite it's popularity? Would the church have any objections to anyone honoring St. Patrick - in a Chrisitan manner - even though the church may not be celebrating St. Patrick's Day this year? Thanks for any information. Just wondering.

The observance of St. Patrick's Day is moved to March 14th. The Solemnity of St. Joseph is moved to March 15th, and the Feast of the Annunciation is moved to March 31.

Popular observance is not dependent on the liturgical calendar. I know in New Orleans, the Irish parade will still be held on the 17th. They cited logistical problems with police permits, float rentals, etc. But the St. Patrick's Day mass at St. Patrick's church will be on the 14th. (New Orleans has parades for everything. I'm not sure when the St. Joseph's parade will be held this year.)
Similarly, many of the St. Joseph's Altars will still take place on the 19th, but mass at St. Joseph's church will be on the 15th.

For those of us blessed with Irish blood, every day is a day for celebration. And for us Catholics, it's with pride we wear our green whene'er we wish!
