Vatican City, Apr 23, 2008 / 03:12 am (CNA).- The Vatican has approved the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, the English convert and theologian who has had immense influence upon English-speaking Catholicism, the Birmingham Mail reports.
John Henry Newman was born in 1801. As an Anglican priest, he led the Oxford Movement that sought to return the Church of England to its Catholic roots. His conversion to Catholicism in 1845 rocked Victorian England. After becoming an Oratorian priest, he was involved in the establishment of the Birmingham Oratory.
He died in 1890 and is buried at the oratory country house Rednall Hill.
The Catholic Church has accepted as miraculous the cure of an American deacon’s crippling spinal disorder. The deacon, Jack Sullivan of Marshfield, Massachusetts, prayed for John Henry Newman’s intercession.
At his beatification ceremony later this year, John Henry Newman will receive the title “Blessed.” He will need one more recognized miracle to be canonized.
The case of a 17-year-old New Hampshire boy who survived serious head injuries from a car crash is being investigated as a possible second miracle.

So has it been proposed of who/what he would be a patron saint for?
I looked for that information but didn't find much.

Cajunrick,
It's about time my personal hero was beatified! Now you can really make my day and tell me Mr. Sullivan was a UMass/Amherst graduate, home of one of THE BIGGEST NEWMAN CENTERS IN THE WORLD, IF NOT THE BIGGEST.
Okay, I'm being a little chauvinistic here, but it'd only be appropriate, even though Marshfield--or as it's more often referred to by the natives east of the Quabbin Reservoir that divides my commonwealth, "Mahhshfield" belongs to the "Irish Riveria" on Bahhhston's "south shoaaahhhhh."
Now, we need another miracle to get people down that way to recognize the colonists out here and learn to speak.
Yes, Newman penned the words "pride ruled my way, one step not enough for me..." but indulge us a moment of chest thumpin'
S.

Catholic campus ministries are generally known as Newman Centers, so I would think his first patronage will be such a ministry. I wouldn't be surprised to see something within the Anglican Use community dedicated in his honor, as well as facilities in England. Patronages typically develop over time.
After his beatification, churches can be named in his honor and public devotions can be held, so we'll just have to see what comes about.

So I guess hoping for a 'new' saint for converts might be asking alot.
just a thought.

Well, there is no need to pray only to "recognized" saints with a particular patronage. I take it for granted that Blessed Newman will eventually be counted as a patron for converts, but even if he isn't, any convert is free to pray to him for assistance both for themselves and for the conversion of others.
All converts also have personal patrons in the form of the saints they choose for baptismal and/or confirmation names, and Bl. John Newmann would certainly be a worthy candidate for selection as a patron for any confirmation candidate, convert or not.

Thanks for the responce, those are good points.
So for the purposes of chosing a confirmation name, the individual chosen doesn't have to be a saint yet? What I mean is can choose a Blessed if you wanted?

You can actually chose any Christian name so, for example, names like Faith, Hope, Charity, Chastity, Christian, etc., are all acceptable as virtues to be emulated. (Some dioceses may actually restrict the choice of a name to a recognized saint for the purposes of having the candidate do a report on that saint's life.)
A person who is beatified (that is, given the title "Blessed") may have churches named after them, public devotions held in their honor, etc. Devotions to them are generally more localized to particular communities where they were well known, or religious communities where they ministered.
So the answer to your question is yes, a person who has been designated as Blessed can be chosen as a confirmation patron.
