I know we have some members who are suffering with chronic pain.  I would like to share a story with you about a little girl who accepted her pain as God's will for her.

Charlene Richard was 12 years old when she was diagnosed with leukemia.  Doctors say she suffered horribly but never complained.  Instead, she offered her suffering to God.  She died 13 days after diagnosis.  Today, thousands of pilgrims visit her grave each year, and due to her pious life and the miracles attributed to her, a cause for canonization has been opened in the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana.  Devotion to her is approved but not endorsed by the bishop of Lafayette, Michael Jarrell.

You can read more about Charlene here.  A book written about Charlene is available here.

I offer this to you because I believe Charlene can help you to understand and endure your suffering as she endured hers.

Rick:

I'll have to admit, You made me cry.  This was such a kind offer and I thank you very much.

I printed out the information and made out my envelope to send my order tomorrow.

I've never heard of this young lady before but I'm excited to read the book and learn from her.  I try really hard to offer up this cross I'm called to carry, But sometimes It feels so heavy and I struggle with it.  I have alot of trouble with discernment, For example.  Does God want me to stay at home and take care of my family, While not being able to participate in things at church?  My health situation is such that I'm just not able to do both, If there is a function at church that I would like to participate in, I have to rest all day, as not to get my pain to increase.  When I get to the activity I have to have an Ice pak and a pillow for my lower back, all the while my pain increases to the point that I have to rush home.  Or if it's a function my mom-inlaw attends, then she tries to wait on me and take care of me.  It's very kind of her, But it's sometimes embarassing.

I sometimes feel confusion as to which I'm supposed to follow God or my Doctor's, Although sometimes I think that God wants my obedience to follow my doctor's directions.  I know that God is the obvious choice.  It just gets confusing.  I think I'm possibly creating confusion where there need not be.  That's why I'm thinking I should seek some spiritual direction.  It's so hard to make appointments, I never know from day to day how I will feel or whether I'll even be able to walk.  I know that my situation is necessary and from my past behavior and life style it really is best for me.  I just want to do anything and everything that is pleasing to God.  Maybe I worry to much too.

I wish I could attend all the great bible studies, and talk that we have at our parish.  I get really excited and love to learn about our faith.

Thank You Again Rick

Betty

God has many angels, "messengers of the Lord".  Were it not given by God, your doctor would have no ability at all.  Were it not for God, the researchers who discovered medications to alleviate pain could not have done so.  Were it not for God, the plants on which most medicines are based would not exist.  Were it not for God, electricity would never have existed, been harnessed, and used to power medical equipment.  I could go on, but you get the point.

Modern medicine is a gift from God.  When their advice is in your best interest, it should be followed.  However, sometimes doctors advise beyond their ability, as when they keep treating terminally ill patients whom they know they cannot benefit.  Seek a second or even third opinion if necessary to determine that a certain form of medical treatment is best for you, and then let them use the talents and abilities God gave them.

Contact your priest and ask him if he can visit you at your house.  Tell him you have a medical condition that sometimes prevents you from walking.   Chances are he'll gladly meet you at your home.
