Hello Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Lately, I have been learning so much about Mary and this has increased my appreciation for her.  I was just thinking today how so much rested on Mary's devotion to God and her acceptance to bear, give birth to and raise the Son of God, our Savior.

When one looks at it from spiritual eyes, we can see the magnificence of this calling that Mary had.  She was responsible for protecting the Word Incarnate while He was still in her womb.  Everything she did at that time would have deep spiritual implications.  And then the awesome responsibility of raising the Son of God.  How awesome indeed!

She was indeed the Ark of the New Covenant, something I never knew until recently.  I am beginning to understand why the Catholic faith honors her and gives her so much dignity.  And this new revelation to me is awe-inspiring!

Darlene

Have you ever considered, Darlene, just how much your own life, especially your ongoing journey of faith, resembles Mary’s relationship with the Holy Spirit? The divine indwelling, as expressed in John 14:23, makes us all, in a certain sense, arks of the covenant.

David

Perhaps this should be filed under recommended resources. But, I would like to recommend a very fine article in the February issue of, First Things. It is an article entitled, "Evangelicals and the Mother of God." by Timothy George, Dean of the Divinity School at Samford University. That article can be viewed on their website at http://www.firstthings.com

Dr. George includes insights into how Luther and Calvin viewed Mary.

First Things, in case you have missed it, is a very good publication.

Best Regards

This is indeed an excellent article, and those who are having problems with Marian devotion in the Church, in particular in regards to their spouses, should print it and read it and study it.

In the whole article, there is only one sentence I found which is questionable to Church doctrine, and that is the line that calls Mary both sinless and sinful.  I understand his meaning, but the wording is awkward to Catholic sensibilities.  The rest of the article is very good, and might well serve as a bridge between Catholic and evangelical thought.  And he is correct in saying that those Catholics who practice excess devotion to Mary can learn a lot from evangelicals.

The article in question can be found here.  Everyone would do well to read it, and those who are having problems with Marian devotion in the Church might well understand it better by having it presented by an ordained Southern Baptist minister.

I justread the article but will do so again.  I was a bit confused at times as to what the stance of the writer was.  Personally, I didn't care for the author's writing style.
