| I want to attend my grandson's confirmation. He will be confirmed into the Lutheran church. I do not know if communion will be offered, but in any case, of course, I will not participate in that. I will also go to Mass on that weekend. My question is: My son says that all the family will be asked to come up and stand around my grandson for a moment of prayer. Is it all right for me to participate in this part of the service? In the Peace of Christ, Bonita

Bonita, even though a Lutheran confirmation is a not the same as a Catholic confirmation, it is a meaningful time in your grandson’s life and contains some genuine religious significance for him. Your willingness to attend the ceremony shows that you are acting out of love for your grandson and not to practice or promote the Lutheran faith. As a result, I see no reason why you cannot take your place beside him for a moment of prayer. Even if the minister offers a prayer aloud (probably harmless in itself, nothing you would have to reject), you can add your own prayer within your soul, and that would be your Catholic contribution.
So I say go, have a good time and please your family. You will not be renouncing your faith but demonstrating it in an interfaith setting.

Absolutely. You are honoring the faith commitment he is making, and he deserves to have his entire family supporting him. Lord knows he will face enough trials and tribulations later in his life.
You are correct, of course, that you should not receive Lutheran communion and should still attend mass. It would also be quite appropriate to have your grandson accompany you to mass, and to ask the priest to give him a blessing after mass in honor of his Lutheran confirmation. Of course, he should know that he is not to receive communion in a Catholic church.
