Can someone tell me when adoration of the Eucharist began?  What does history have to say about this?  What did the early church fathers say about this?  How does one defend this practice?

I last went to Eucharist Adoration two weeks ago, and I have always felt at peace while there and have left with peace.  Still though, I have questions.

Darlene, try this site.

The whole site is excellent, but this link above is specifically about the Early Christians and the Eucharist.

Just wondering, is it the peace you have questions about or where the peace comes from?

Credo,  I have questions as to whether it can be defended historically from the eary church.  And by early church, I mean within the first 4 centuries.  The peace I have felt, I believe, is due to the depth of prayer that I have experienced and the the reverence shown among others who are praying there as well.  Something rarely experienced among Protestants.

One of Fr. Groeschel’s books, In the Presence of Our Lord, deals directly with this topic. Written in collaboration with James Monti, it carries the subtitle, “The History, Theology, and Psychology of Eucharistic Devotion.” I found it very informative.

As a long-time participant in Eucharistic devotions of various sorts (starting with Benediction back in the 60s), I know what you refer to when you speak of peace. I typically spend my weekly hour just “being there” with Jesus.

By the way, I too like The Real Presence website; it’s one of my favorites.

Hi Darlene, I too experience peace when I am before the Eucharist.  The first time I went to adoration, I felt uncomfortable at first because I wasn't used to just sitting in church, with no one speaking or moving or anything!  It took me awhile to quiet myself down and begin to understand really what it was all about.  When I began to realize the true presence of Christ there, was when I knew I was in the right place.  It isn't really the building, or the room, as beautiful as it is, but I am drawn to the presence of my Lord there.  I didn't know, like you, if it was because I was just praying and being still, and knowing His presence, or if I was wanting to so badly.  But now, I don't want to go a day without at least dropping by the church for a few minutes of prayer in front of the tabernacle.  Most days I go for daily mass and stay for awhile and pray a rosary or novena and make an hour of it if I can.  It's the most powerful hour of the day, by far.  I don't know the history, I'm sure there is one!  I just know the results.
