Background: Quinten is 6. We have been homelearning religion for three years. Two year's dedicated to my older daughter to prepare her for baptism and First Holy Communion. Of course Q was around, as in sitting on my lap, for those lessons. He also attended CCD the year before last. Last year was dedicated one on one time to him in RE, as well as CCD. At home, we completed the St. Joseph Balt. Cat for Comm prep, and grade two in Faith & Life.
So, going into parish RE this year, he should only be in first grade. IMO, he is ready for First Communion this year. He knows his prayers, knows what Communion is, he asks for it. I'm not sure how to approach the RED of our parish about it, though. Emotionally, he is not at a second grade level, nor is he intelectually. Meaning, he can't read well enough to keep up with second graders. For our First Communion class this year, our parrish will only have two other students, though. And they don't always show up, ifkwim. But spiritually, I really do believe he is ready for this next step. I know talking to the RED is just the first step, that our priest also has to ok it, and the teacher also has to be on board with us. I will, of course, continue our home education in religion as well.
For you seasoned in the church, especially any related to RE in the parish, what's your opinion on stuff like this? I don't want to come off as a pushy Mom that thinks her son is better than other kids And I'm not offended easily, so don't just tell me what you think I might want to hear
Thanks for your help and your opinion!
Ali

| Just ask, the worst thing that can happen is they say "no." My Mom always said, "it never hurts to ask."
