Recently another friend (Protestant) and I attended Mass where friends of ours were received into the Catholic Church. As we drove home one of the things she said that bothers her concerning the Eucharist is "Why to they call it a "sacrifice" ? It was already done once for all when Jesus died on the cross, Why do they feel they(Catholics) have to do it over and over?"
I am in the process of becoming Catholic, my friend is a lifelong anabaptist and highly educated. I attempted an answer but would like to hear what others would say. Thanks

We don't do it over and over. The Eucharistic celebration makes the eternal sacrifice of the cross present again at each and every mass. We do not crucify Christ again; we participate in his eternal sacrifice.
The crucifixion was an event in time. However, in heaven there is no time, and all events are eternal, including the sacrifice of the cross. In the mass we "tap into" this eternal sacrifice and make it present once again in time, through the action of our High Priest acting through his ordained minister. There is one sacrifice; Jesus died once for us all, but his sacrifice is eternally being offered to the Father. At every mass, we participate in that one eternal, timeless sacrifice.

Thank you.
As I see it, a bit of the problem people like my friend have is having a Protestant mind set. I was blessed to have several years of Catholic education. I also did not have parents who went to church, but sent me to what ever Protestant church we lived near at the time. Some of what I had to find outby reading and asking others has paid off.
Sixty years of "research" has led me to Rome
