Okay, time for naming cool things!

We had a holy hour last night (it was really cool, Father had all of the Church lights off and all of the candles lit-- really set the mood, so to say) and I'm curious to the names of the clothing he was wearing.

He had on a very majestic, beautiful, purple.... cloak thing.  I would say vestment, but I don't think that's quite it, because his front was open and you could very easily see his stole.  Purple I'm assuming for advent.  But what's the thing actually called? lol

Then, what is it that he puts on for Benediction?  I've always wondered what that was called as well.

Kayla, the cloak-like vestment used for Eucharistic Benediction is called the humeral veil.

“Humeral” refers to the upper arm, because it is suspended from the shoulders as a mantle or cloak rather than being a regular article of clothing.

You will notice that the priest uses the veil to pick up the monstrance. “Veil” refers to its function, which is to protect the monstrance from being in contact with the priest’s hands. The significance of the lack of touching is that at Benediction, it is Jesus Christ himself, present in the form of the Eucharist, who gives the blessing; the priest is only, as it were, “assisting” him.

When I was a new Catholic, Benediction was my favorite devotion. I attended it regularly until, unfortunately, like many other beautiful devotions and customs, it was discontinued in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council.

Everything worn by the priest and altar ministers are known as "vestments" and the act of putting on the vestments is known as "vesting" from the verb "to vest".

David mentioned the Humeral Veil, which is distinguished by it's extreme length.  It permits the priest to handle the Eucharist without actually touching it or the vessel that contains it.  It is also used in the Holy Thursday procession to the Altar of Repository.

The other, cape-type vestment is known as a Cope.  It really is more like a cape in that it connects at the neck and has no sleeves.  It's worn for some ceremonies instead of a chasuble.

EWTN has a text file on the vestments and their history here.

You can see pictures (and prices!) of many styles and colors of vestments at many web sites, including Aquinas and More.  You'll probably be surprised how expensive they are.

Also, David mentioned that Benediction was discontinued after Vatican II.  The Church still encourages Benediction, but many priests felt it was no longer "useful" and so it was discontinued in many parishes.  Many Catholics today probably don't even know Benediction exists.
