Hello Everyone,
The title says it all. Although I must say that I have not attended RCIA classes in a month, mainly because I don't want a "rift" between my husband and me. However, I do not intend to become a Catholic until Easter 2008, since I joined RCIA classes very late.
With that said, there are many on this forum who are on a journey toward the Catholic Church, but have not yet become Catholic. So, should those of us in this category partake of Communion in our Protestant Churches that we are still attending with spouses/families?
On a rather good note, recently my husband and I both decided that we no longer want to take The Lord's Supper in our Protestant Non-denominational Church. Why? We do not consider ourselves in "communion" (that is agreement) with many things that are currently acceptable/believed/preached, etc.
As always, I appreciate your comments.
Darlene

Hi Darlene,
I think you answered your own question. I still attend the Lutheran church with my family, but because I am not in agreement with the teachings, I don't take Communion there. It means something! Too many churches take the sacrament too lightly, as if we're sharing a pizza or something, but it means too much to me to partake and give the impression that I'm in agreement with their theology. I've had two priests tell me the same thing and no one has told me otherwise.

I feel that way too. I have stopped going to a Protestant church, mainly because I moved back home after graduating from college. However, by that time I knew I wanted to become Catholic so I only go to a Catholic church. If do visit a Protestant church I don't plan on taking Communion there. After what I know now about the Catholic teaching of the Real Prescence I couldn't take what is only a symbol. I can't wait to truly receive Christ at the Easter Vigil.

| Thank you for asking this question. I'd had it in mind myself. I've been in RCIA since the end of August and will be coming into the Catholic church this Easter. All along my RCIA journey, I've continued taking communion at the Lutheran church, where I go with my husband and children. However, I'd begun to feel really uneasy about it. This past Sunday was the first Sunday in about a month that I'd had the opportunity to take communion at the Lutheran church, and I did not. It was very awkward for me to not accompany my husband to the front of the sanctuary to receive, but I just could not in good conscience do it. Still, I wasn't sure it actually mattered that much....and since it was such an uncomfortable thing, I wondered. Hearing everyone's responses has been very helpful. I know now that it was right for me to abstain. Thanks!

I am not overstating when I say that I am looking forward to this Easter Vigil and my first REAL Communion with Jesus at least as much as I looked forward to my wedding day or the days my kids were born. It may not end up being as emotional as those events were; I'm trying to keep a realistic perspective. But I've been watching folks go forward and receive Him for 5 months now and I am SO yearning to join them!
