Probably a silly question, but I'll ask all the same.

Our Church has confession for only a half-hour on Saturday afternoons, other than that, an appointment has to be made.

Saturdays is generally a day of work for me - working on the car, or working in the yard.

Is there a "dress code" for confession, such as "no shorts". I generally go to confession wearing casual clothing, like many others I see there. I'm wondering if it would be poor form to seek penance in clothes that I have worked in up to the point of going to confession (with, say, oil stains, grass stains, etc.).

Mitch, we continue to maintain that there is no such thing as a “silly question.” Any question, sincerely asked, is worthy of a proper response.

To enter the confessional, you must first enter the church, with the Lord’s presence in the tabernacle only a few steps away. In receiving the sacrament of penance, you enter the presence of the Lord in the person of the priest to receive grace and forgiveness. In performing your penance, you approach the Lord directly in prayer and in a spirit of repentance. How do you think one should dress in the presence of the Lord? How do you best indicate your reverence and submission to his will?

When necessity dictates, one’s outward appearance is of lesser importance. God accepts us all, even if we are sinful and thus spiritually filthy or lax. But he also expects us to do what we can to improve our spiritual state and show our willingness to be cleansed by his grace. Likewise, if possible, a little physical clean-up would be in order when we are stained with material filth, don’t you think?

David

You know, this had never crossed my mind. In my church, You don't have to enter the sanctuary/nave, just pass through the foyer to a side room where confession is heard. I have never dressed up to go to confession, just worn my usual jeans and shirt but I admit if I was grubby from yardwork, I would probably wash up and change so at least I was semi-clean. If I dressed up, I would feel like I was "puting on airs" as if I didn't even need confession but I am much younger than David and this may be a generational thing, that is, what dressing up means to me.
