I went to Confession today at a church that offers confession before the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The priest gave me my penance, which was five decades of rosary; sorrowfull mysteries.
Now, I have a couple questions. I know that your penance is supposed to be done promptly, idealy right after confession. In this case, my penance was a rather long one. It didn't occur this time, but if there hadn't been proper amount of time before Mass began, could one wait to do their penance until after the Mass? And is the absolution valid before the penance is done? I guess that's to say, if one didn't do their penance before Mass, would they still be able to receive Holy Eucharist? I'm assuming yes to these questions, as they seem kind of technicalities, but I thought I would ask anyways.
Second, at this church a priest always comes out at 11:30am (the Mass is at noon), and leads the community in the rosary. This happened to be the exact time that I had gotten out of the confessional and was ready to do my penance. Today's holy mysteries were the sorrowfull mysteries. Instead of attempting to say my rosary by myself (which I wouldn't have been able to do very well anyways), I prayed the rosary with the rest of the community. I hate the way this questions sounds, but does this "count" as my penance? I prayed the rosary with the intention of it being my penance and meditated upon the mysteries according to the sins I had confessed.
Again, probably nitpicky and a technicality, but I just thought I'd ask.
Thanks.
Kayla

The general rule is “at the earliest reasonable opportunity.” You received absolution, and you had the intention of fulfilling your penance according to the rule. Nothing else is required. Jesus awaits you in the Eucharist.
Instead of attempting to say my rosary by myself… I prayed the rosary with the rest of the community. …Does this "count" as my penance?
Prayer is prayer and the rosary is the rosary. You fulfilled your penance. God is pleased.
