I was wondering, do you have to be Catholic to go to confession? I figure I'll make my first confession before I convert at Easter, but I was wondering, could someone, while still technically a protestant, go to confession? And, would it count?

Anyone can go to confession, but only Catholics (and those about to become Catholic) can receive sacramental absolution.
You're not yet Catholic, Racaela, so you're not bound by the need to confess and receive absolution from the Church. All forgiveness is from God, so trust him that you are indeed forgiven. But you won't be able to hear the blessed words of absolution from a priest until shortly before your entry into the Church.
