To All,

I have 2 questions to ask regarding if one dies before making a good confession or an act of contrition.  I do understand that death may be sudden.

  1.  What happens if you die before you have time to make an Act of Perfect Contrition or make a Good Confession?

  2.  And if at a point you are aware of mortla sins and you resolve deeply in your heart that you will confess as soon as you can but you happen to die are you going to go to Hell?

I was faced with these 2 questions today and have wondered about these things.  I know that the grace of God is present, but have read in the CCC that mortla sins do separate you from the grace of God.  So you can see where my question comes from.

  thanks.

  Sincerely,

  Anne

We are forgiven when we are truly repentent.  God does not wait for formalities.

God has given the Church the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a means to forgive sins, but God is not limited by the sacraments.  If a bullet is travelling at your head, don't worry about whether you  have time to say an act of contrition.  As a Christian, you should already be sorry for offending God.

We go do hell if, at the moment of our death, we actively reject God's grace through sin.  If we have already repented, if we are truly sorry for offending God, then hell is "off the table" and not something we have to worry about.  Yes, we need to have the intention to confess as soon as possible, but in the case of a dire emergency God will not punish us because we have not had the opportunity to tell our sins to a priest.

Unrepented mortal sins do indeed separate us from God's grace, but it's not God who moves.  Through mortal sin, we turn our backs on God.  As soon as we turn around again (through repentence), we once again are bathed in God's grace even before we confess.  It is that grace that forgives us and makes us want to make a sacramental confession, which gives us even more grace and helps us to avoid future sins.

Rick,

Thanks so much for this reply.  It has given hope.  This is perhaps the most encouraging thing I have heard today besides Father's homily this morning.  Thanks for being a blessing to me.

May the peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always.

  Anne
