Do we see a foreshadowing of the sacrament of confession and reconciliation in the Old Testament?

Good evening Jill!
Some Bible passages you might want to check out-Leviticus 5:5, II Samuel 12:13, Exodus 10:17, Leviticus 4:20, Leviticus 16:21, Numbers 5:77, 1 Samuel 15:24-26.
Of course, throughout the entire OT the chosen people sin by falling away from God, repent, confess their sin and God forgives them and usually makes a covenant with them.  That in a way I suppose foreshadows confession, you sin, repent, confess and God forgives you.
God bless,

Very good, Mary Clare.  Especially that last one as an example of "whose sins you retain, they are retained."

Thank you!

Jill

Mary Clare noted instances of confession and cyclical national repentance and forgiveness and restoration in the OT. I would add that there is also the motif of Moses and the priests "atoning" for the people. They stand in between the people and God, much as a Catholic priest does in the confessional. There is thus some analogy to Catholic confession and absolution and forgiveness, though it is not exact (my emphases):

Exodus 32:30-32 On the morrow Moses said to the people, "You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin." So Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Alas, this people have sinned a great sin; they have made for themselves gods of gold. But now, if thou wilt forgive their sin -- and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written."

Numbers 14:19-23 Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray thee, according to the greatness of thy steadfast love, and according as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now." Then the LORD said, "I have pardoned, according to your word; but truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD, none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the proof these ten times and have not hearkened to my voice, shall see the land which I swore to give to their fathers; and none of those who despised me shall see it.

Numbers 16:46-48 And Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone forth from the LORD, the plague has begun." So Aaron took it as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague had already begun among the people; and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people. And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stopped.

Numbers 25:11-13 "Phin'ehas the son of Elea'zar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy. Therefore say, `Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace; and it shall be to him, and to his descendants after him, the covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the people of Israel.'"

2 Samuel 12 wrote:13And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
14Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

Here we have confession of sin to the Lord's representative, forgiveness on behalf of  God (Absolution), and consequences (punishment/penance) of sin extending beyond the act of forgiveness.

That's excellent. It's all right there, isn't it?
